Joanna started with an all-white box room that lacked character, divided by a pair of doors. She was tasked with creating two separate his and hers offices for a young couple with different interests and styles. She explains the project was about, 'Balancing two rooms – one that’s very masculine, and one that is very feminine.'

The result is two distinctly individual spaces. One is luxe, moody, and filled with old-world decor, and the other is refreshingly elegant and French-inspired, both representing the owners' contrasting personalities.

Joanna uses clever styling and a classic palette to make the two rooms feel connected, transforming a once neglected space into stylish studies. Plus, she's shared where to buy the key pieces from each space.

Despite the home offices being very different in style, Joanna uses rustic, vintage-inspired decor to give both spaces a similar sense of character and aged elegance.

Starting in his office, Joanna explains how she added character to the space. 'This was their formal living room, into the formal dining room. Literally just a white box with concrete floors. And now what you see is these warm laminate floors. After we applied the molding and this chair rail, we then painted it all one color and then added this beautiful wallpaper. The (Windsor Blue wallpaper available at Home Depot) is from my newest collection with York. I love how all of this really comes together. You have these layers, you have this texture.' These architectural touches frame the space and radiate grandeur, perfect for a refined study room.

Taking one space and dividing it into two, Joanna separates the rooms with a pair of doors. Although the two rooms are different, Joanna explains that you can blend the two spaces together using the right decor, common colors, and good styling. 'Then you step from dark to light, and you see how these patterns and colors and even the styling all tie back to each other. You can really blend that beautifully, even in the difference, even in the contrast, how do you tie it together so it doesn't seem so different?'

The keywords from her office could not have been more different from Masculine & Moody, for this space the brief was Happy French Girl.

Starting with the wallpaper idea, Joanna says, 'In here I used my wallpaper, this is French Linen Stripe from Magnolia. We did some trim work on the ceiling and painted it Sunday Stroll from Magnolia. Taking their very basic, normal, hollow core door, we added this applied molding to make it feel just a little more elevated.' Like his office, her office features similar architectural features that create a sense of character.

Like all good rug trends, this piece helps bring warmth and pattern into the room. Joanna says, 'I really wanted to ground the space with this beautiful patterned textured rug.' The vintage-style furniture gives the space some patina and personality. 'These sweet, simple chairs just help create a moment where they can drink coffee, tea, and connect.'

There are plenty of thoughtful details in her office, but the personal shadow box is an intentional touch that nods back to the client. Joanna says, 'The story here was she wanted it to be very French-inspired. This is one of my favorite things to add to any space, just a collection of stories and intention that makes the room feel a lot more meaningful.'

Joanna makes the home office look beautiful with her signature elevated country style. It's obvious that the young couple has been considered right from the start, as Joanna nods to their personalities in small but mighty ways throughout the design.

This garden, owned and tended to by Marshall Watson and his partner Paul Sparks, is a particularly showstopping sanctum, brimming with garden ideas and overflowing with fodder for the imagination. Of course, the garden's magic owes much to its pulse-raising location. Still, perhaps more interesting is its strategic planting.

This coastal garden has a fairly understated planting scheme that presents a counterpoise to the ubiquity of prettified, floral, feminine planting often seen across the Hamptons. Here, we look at some of the glorious garden rooms that make up the garden as a whole, and delve into the planting and landscape design that formed the aesthetic success of the garden.

Lifestyle writer and photographer Blue Carreon’s new book, ‘The Gardens of the Hamptons, available from Amazon’, features a plethora of some of the most extraordinary gardens dotted around this iconic area, including this coastal paradise.

The garden unfolds as a choreographed sequence, yet feels almost entirely accidental, uncurated, and despite its picture-perfect style, it feels entirely relaxed and unpretentious.

‘It is a formal garden, but not strict and rigid. Everything has been thoughtfully designed and laid out for leisure, entertaining, and enjoyment’ explains Blue Carreon. ‘It has a spectacular waterfront location and sits high on a bluff offering uninterrupted views. Being on the water, it is exposed to harsh environmental elements, but somehow Marshall was able to tame these conditions and has orchestrated a thriving and beautiful garden.’

Partitions in gardens can be very effectively used as methods of seduction, to tempt you to walk through to the next area.

The hide-and-seek of not knowing what happens next makes the whole experience that much more intriguing. Nowhere is this demonstrated better than at this Hampton's garden, which has made use of the classical visual play of extending views.

Large gardens tend to need divisions in order to give them intimacy.

‘Since Marshall is an interior designer, he designed the garden with various rooms as he does with interiors.’ Blue explains. ‘You arrive in the gravel courtyard, which he likens to a garden entry hall. A couple of wisteria varieties climb over the garage, and there are various potted David Austin roses.'

'Adjacent to the courtyard is the potager, which has steps that lead to a Belvedere gazebo, which acts as a lookout point where one can soak in the garden.’

‘From there, the gates open to reveal the central axis of the garden. A swimming pool that doubles as a reflecting pool leads to the Greek Revival house.

'This is the walled garden and it features a hydrangea walk, topiarized lilac trees, a variety of peonies, soaring pin oak trees, and what has become the hallmarks of the garden - the dappled Japanese willow trees.’

Technical understanding of plants and their vagaries will only take you so far when designing. At some point, it is important to cut loose. The reason this garden excites me quite so much is that it strikes the perfect balance between form and frivolity.

The owners have adhered to the necessary corsets all grand, formal gardens need to, whilst also letting the abandon and lushness of nature flow freely.

The beds are not overly manicured, and fat cushions of flower and foliage sprawl and spill over paths, pollinators graze happily, and roses sprawl unencumbered.

'Marshall comes from a family of gardeners, so he has woven his family history through the plantings.' Blue explains.

'There are varieties that came from his childhood garden, as well as plants that were cultivated by his siblings. It is a singular garden in terms of style since it has been created by a passionate gardener who is meticulous about details and symmetry and who laboriously tends to it with love.'

At this time of year, the garden throbs in a tidal wave of color, and the nearby ocean makes the space feel remote and untouchable.

Foliage underpins all of the planting, and acts as a wonderful prelude to the floral element, providing a base note to the entire scheme.

There are many spots to perch and absorb the garden, and its many views. This is crucial for making it a place that makes you want to slow down, kick back and stay a while.

Something of a hybrid between a comfortable, lived-in garden with naturalistic planting and a more formal garden with carefully measured reduction and a distinct lack of ostentation, that does nothing to make the space less impressive.

While many color combinations feature complementary hues, those that sit opposite one another on the color wheel, resulting in a high-contrast look, pink and brown feel unexpectedly soft and harmonious when used together, shares designer Lynn Kloythanomsup of Landed Interiors: 'Brown and pink seem to work in harmony since they are adjacent on the color wheel. Pink is a tint of red, and brown is a shade of orange. Red and orange are next to each other on the color wheel, and are close in relationship.'

Here, I've rounded up my favorite rooms that reflect the on-trend (yet timeless) pink and brown color combination to inspire you to decorate with these two hues. From bathrooms to bedrooms, living spaces to dining rooms, these room color ideas offer inspiration for many spaces and design styles.

1. Ground a soft pink with dark brown accents

The best pink paints make a stylish wall color choice, but you may want to choose those that are pale to ensure a timeless look. In this cozy living room, Sherwin-Williams' Ivory Lace provides a touch of pink while working as a neutral. The ceiling beams were painted with Benjamin Moore's Bittersweet Chocolate, and together the two paint colors offer a pared-back take on this color combination.

'When it comes to rooms where pink and brown come together, we select pinks that are toned down or neutralized, and not necessarily bright or hot, so that they pair well with the many variations of brown,' explains the interior designer Lynn Kloythanomsup of San Francisco Bay and NYC-based Landed Interiors.

If you want to create more of a playful look, go for a bubblegum pink paint, such as Benjamin Moore's Yours Truly, which was used on the walls in this traditional living room. 'In this powder room, a warm brown oak vanity and leather pendant anchor the space, while the striking Cosmopolitan Quartzite countertop catches focus,' explains designer Lucas Goldbach, partner and design director at En Masse Architecture & Design. 'The pink stone is warm but bold, while the brown and brass details ground the palette. Cool tones in the wallpaper and window trim add just enough contrast to let the pink and brown shine, creating a layered and enveloping experience.'

Hailing from Bahrain, Noor trained at the Culinary Institute of America in New York, before moving to the UK in her twenties, where she worked under Ottolenghi – the master of Middle Eastern cuisine – becoming head of the Ottolenghi Test Kitchen and co-authoring some of his books.

Noor has now written her own recipe book, which is packed with colorful and creative dishes inspired by ingredients and techniques from her home region. 'I really enjoy hosting in the summer as we’re spoilt for choice in terms of what we can bring to the table,' says Noor. 'There are so many vegetables to play with, and people are just happier in the summer, kicking back and enjoying each other’s company. I also love it when they taste the food and enjoy it. It’s something that really brings me joy, to see them having a lovely time.'

Noor creates a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere in her yard, through everything from the bench seating with comfortable cushions, to the fun lanterns and the considered, but not too 'done' table setting, which lends itself to passing dishes around to share and inspire conversation.

'Middle Eastern people love to feed. We’re quite generous in the way that we serve food. A table that looks full and abundant is my style,' she adds.

'Bringing people together via food is just such a lovely way to celebrate friendships and connection. I hope to create a very relaxed, calm and welcoming atmosphere. I want people to just walk in and feel at home - completely taken care of,' Noor adds.

Noor Murad's stunning Middle Eastern recipes

Noor's recipes are simple and delicious ways with vegetables and fruit, which she transforms with a clever combination of sweet, sour, spicy and savory ingredients, taking inspiration from her upbringing. 'I always lead with Middle Eastern flavours – it’s just my go-to, it’s my instinct, it’s the way I cook,' she explains.

‘When I think about planning a menu, I think about the time of year and what’s in season. I also think about who’s coming - everyone’s quite different - so you have to know your audience and who you’re cooking for and then you can kind of take it from there,’ she explains.

'For this spread, I just thought of really nice, delicate, summery flavors. You have to make sure that the flavors really complement each other in a nice way, and that not one dish is so overpowering that the other dishes don’t have a chance,' explains Noor. 'You don’t want an attention-seeker dish but dishes that all want to play together.'

Pan-fried tomatoes with za'atar, pine nuts, and halloumi

'For these pan-fried tomatoes, I want them to soften and take on a bit of color but I don’t want them to completely fall apart,' Noor says. 'Tomatoes are already very sweet, but cooking them in a bit of olive oil and maple syrup really brings that out and it’s just so lovely.' She adds grated halloumi and toasted golden pine nuts cooked with oregano and za'atar. 'I then sprinkle it with extra za’tar because I just love how lovely and herbaceous it is,' Noor adds.

Grilled green beans with lemon and feta

'For this griddled green beans dish I’ve made this lovely dressing with grilled lemon, slow-cooked onion, lemon juice, loads of herbs and maple syrup,' explains Noor.

'Take your time when you plate things and really put love and thought into it. If you have sharing plates it just encourages conversation,' she adds. 'My favorite thing about having people over is the togetherness of it all - enjoying food and relaxing. That's the whole point of hosting isn’t it?'

Sesame beets with charred scallions

'When I’m planning a summer menu, I really think about color,' explains Noor. 'For example these sesame beets with charred scallions are a lovely way to bring happiness to your table.'

She tosses them in a simple dressing of yogurt, tahini, toasted sesame oil and lime juice before topping with the charred scallions, so the bright green contrasts beautifully with the rich pink of the beets.

Ginger nectarines

'This is my ginger nectarine dish – I’ve left it until last so the nectarines don’t spoil. It’s so easy to make that you can just assemble it before serving,' says Noor. She fries off some ginger, mustard seeds and chilli and uses the flavorful frying oil as a base for the dressing before mixing with maple syrup and lime juice.

'My grandfather used to have a house in Lebanon and I spent a lot of my childhood summers there,' Noor shares. 'It has this beautiful fertile land where loads of fruit grows and at the end of a meal they’d always bring out big platters of fresh stone fruits – I remember just eating them with the juice dripping down my chin. That inspired me to do this dish.'

'This look is quite colorful, really vibrant – I want it to scream ‘joy’ in every way, from a bright tablecloth to the colorful cushions. The plates are quite mismatched and neutral because I want the food to be loud.' Noor explains.

She layers her table starting with a bold sunshine yellow tablecloth, adding neutral basics in natural colors and textures, before popping in some statement tortoiseshell flatware, pink and green glassware, and plenty of cheerful garden flowers. Linen napkins and floral woven napkin rings add a finishing touch.

'My favourite colors are sunset colors – not just in the food but you can see it in the flowers, too, ' Noor adds. 'I’ve started bringing something back with me from everywhere I travel. I really love these bud vases... They’re a real statement, and at the end of the day, you can give away the flowers for people to take home, which is such a lovely thing.'

1. Switch your drinks cooler for a cocotte

One of my favorite alternative cast iron cookware uses in summer is to turn a Dutch oven into an unexpectedly chic ice bucket. For the best results, start by chilling your Dutch oven in the refrigerator or freezer (if you have space) for a few hours – enameled cast iron holds cold just as beautifully as it retains heat. Just before your event, fill it with ice cubes, leaving enough room to nestle in your beverage bottles or cans.

I recommend opting for the largest size you have. My 7.5 quart oval cocotte from Staub, offers plenty of space for ice and bottles, and can even roast a turkey in the winter.

2. Use a griddle as a fruit platter

Most people think of their griddle only for searing, but thanks to cast iron's ability to retains cold too, it is ideal for serving a fresh fruit salad on, keeping your fruit juicy and cool on a hot day.

To prepare, simply place your griddle in the refrigerator, freezer, or an ice bath for least an hour before serving. Once thoroughly chilled, arrange your fruit directly onto the plate (try red berries, blueberries, and sliced honeydew melon for 4th of July colors). For extra refined presentation, you could layer in edible flowers, fresh mint, or a few citrus rounds.

3. Use your cast iron for ice cream

Staub's mini cocottes might be one of the most delightful ways to serve ice cream recipes – and they do more than just look sweet. Thanks to their enameled cast iron construction, they help to keep scoops firm and slow down the melting effectively.

To prep, chill your cocottes in the freezer for at least an hour before serving. When you're ready, scoop your ice cream directly into the cold dishes and finish with your frozen toppings. Note that Le Creuset's mini round cocottes are equally adorable, but they are made from stoneware, not cast iron, so you won't get quite the same cooling effect.

If you have the freezer space, you could put your homemade ice cream into a larger cocotte to freeze, then take it straight to the table when you're ready to serve.

4. Keep oysters cool with cast iron

When it comes to serving oysters, presentation and temperature are everything – and cast iron delivers on both. A pre-chilled cast iron surface, like a griddle plate or cocotte makes a stunning and practical piece of serveware.

To prepare, place your cookware in the freezer for at least an hour. Fill with ice crystals or granita, then return to the freezer until ready to serve. Finally, nestle the oysters and a few lemon wedges into the crushed ice to help stabilize them. Again, you could garnish with edible flowers for a touch of elegance.

5. Create a cast iron bowl

First, make sure your Dutch oven is nice and clean. Then, just like for the other alternative cast iron uses, pop it in an ice bath, freezer or refrigerator for a couple of hours to chill. When you're ready to serve, fill it with ice cubes and punch. I suggest using flavored ice cubes (perhaps citrus slices frozen in juice) or even cubes made from the same drink you’re serving, to avoid dilution.

To help retain the chill, pop the lid on between pours, and if you're setting it directly on a table, be sure to place it on a tray or trivet (I like these natural fibre placemats from Amazon) to catch any condensation

Known for her modern rustic style, Amber is the founder of ultra-chic homeware brand Shoppe Amber Interiors and a successful interior design studio. If you've been following Amber, you'll know she has the ability to take a space (of pretty much any description) and turn it into a space that's warm, rustic, and luxurious yet liveable.

Recently, Amber shared a before-and-after of a bland, all-gray home. She saw past the stark overhead lighting and cold surfaces, transforming the rather uninspiring spaces into welcoming rooms that each feel connected to her warm, organic design style.

Dining room

There was nothing wrong with the original dining room; it just lacked character, and felt a bit stuck in the early '00s. The initial space was a little cold; it had some nice furniture pieces, but the scheme was flat. The overall vibe was stark rather than that all-important welcome you expect from a dining room.

Amber totally transformed the space, revamping the walls with a chic lime wash and adding in exposed wooden beams to frame the room and bring depth. To build upon the rustic earthiness of the wall and ceiling finishes and features, Amber added some antique-style wood furniture that brings that all-important sense of grandeur and tradition, which is so fitting for this space.

We can't ignore the statement wall mural. The feature breaks up the layers of brown tones, and it's the perfect area of interest for guests to gaze at during meal time. It's a serene forest landscape, simple yet still prominent, that connects all the earthy and rustic elements and acts as the room's framing focal point.

Living room

Another room that feels unrecognizable, Amber reimagined the once bland gray living room, transforming the architecture of the space by adding a stone fireplace, wall paneling, exposed beams, and a rather enviable window seat.

The layout has been extended for the window seat, and the result is a living room that feels spacious and open, not to mention far more intentional. Getting rid of the conventional square layout, Amber added this separate zone for daytime relaxing, proving how much difference these thoughtful spaces make.

There are other characterful touches that make a world of difference to the space, like the fireplace that gives the living room a sense of subtle intricacy and grandeur, and adds age to a room that was once so typical of a new build.

Despite decorating with neutrals, the space feels interesting and inviting, proving that even the most subtle colors are welcoming when layered right. 'We sourced the beadboard strips from our local hardware store and referenced YouTube videos to figure out the proper way to install them. My husband made the peg shelf above the beadboard to add much-needed storage in the entryway and sink area. We often use that peg rail to hang extra kitchen items.'

'In my farmhouse kitchen at Silent G Farms, we updated the hardware after buying the home. It was a subtle yet impactful change to our country escape,' says interior designer Elizabeth Bolognino of Elizabeth Bolognino Interiors, whose kitchen is pictured above.

This is echoed by designer Jessica Whitley, who adds: 'One of the simplest and most effective DIY upgrades in a kitchen is changing the hardware – it’s like jewelry for cabinetry. Swapping in modern pulls or classic knobs can instantly refresh the look.'

Ingredients

• Six unwaxed lemons, juiced and peeled
• 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar

1. Place the lemon juice and zest (use something like this OXO Good Grips Swivel Vegetable Peeler from Amazon) in a pan with the sugar.
2. Reduce on a medium heat until syrupy – this will take around 30 minutes.

4. Serve a slug of the syrup with gin and tonic, vodka and tonic or sparkling water, to taste.

I use quite a lot of coriander in this dish. But for the coriander haters out there, you can use parsley, or a bit of dill, or some mint would be lovely. It really freshens up this salad recipe in a lovely way. I don’t think that herbs should just be used as a garnish – we use herbs quite heavily in the Middle East.

Ingredients

• 1¼oz fresh ginger, peeled and julienned (we recommend this Microplane from Amazon)
• 4 tbsp olive oil
• 1 tsp black mustard seeds
• 1 tsp Aleppo chilli flakes
• 3 semi-ripe peaches or nectarines, halved, stoned and cut into ¼in slices (1lb 1oz)
• ½oz cilantro, leaves and soft stems picked
• 1½ tbsp lime juice
• 1½ tsp maple syrup
• fine sea salt

The Homes & Gardens method

1. Add the ginger and oil to a small skillet (try the HexClad Fry Pan, a Homes & Gardens favorite) and place over a medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes or until the ginger starts to turn lightly golden and crisp.
2. Add the mustard seeds and chilli and cook for just 45 seconds more, until the ginger is nicely golden and the seeds begin to pop.
3. Immediately strain the solids through a strainer set over a bowl. Set both the oil and solids aside to cool, separately.
4. Just before serving, add the peaches, cilantro, lime juice, maple syrup, half the cooled ginger oil and ¼ teaspoon salt to a large bowl and toss everything together.
5. Transfer to a serving plate and pour over the remaining ginger oil. Top with the fried aromatics and serve right away.

If you like halloumi – one of my favorite things to pair with this ginger nectarines dish – try it with our griddled zucchini and halloumi salad, and my pan-fried tomatoes with za'atar, pine nuts and halloumi.

Plenty of interior design trends feel like time capsules. Take midcentury modern style homes, for example; they're a shining example of design from the Baby Boomer generation. While many of us love the retro nostalgia of this aesthetic (I think it radiates contemporary coolness), I'm sure many of the Boomers who lived through it are more than over the trend. The cyclical nature of trends probably leaves whole generations thinking 'no, not that again.'

Here, I spoke with interior designers of all ages about what features, decor, and aesthetics they hate from their generation.

1. Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964)

The 'Baby Boomer' generation was a time of advancement in industrial and commercial interior design. Designers took risks with new materials, creating distinctive looks that were the first of their kind.

Liz Williams, Founder and Principal Designer of Liz Williams Interiors, says, 'The baby boomer generation leaned into futurism in design – vinyl furniture, Formica counters, and, of course, TV trays seem to be the things that are not remembered fondly! These elements can feel cold or dated in today’s homes.'

Debbie Mathews LeRoy, Founder and Principal Designer of Debbie Mathews Antiques & Designs, explains her love-hate relationship with the retro style. 'While I’m technically a baby boomer (though on the tail end!), I grew up surrounded by a loud color palette. My parents' decor involved a lot of avocado greens, golds, and rusts. I will never forget our living room shag area rug that was striated in a variety of colors, and my mother literally raking it to make the carpet fibers stand up! We had kitchen appliances in gold, and my grandparents had appliances in avocado green.'

Unlike the midcentury modern teak furniture that defined the era, Debbie is attracted to all things ornate and antique. 'And my furniture couldn't be more different than the mid-century modern pieces that my parents embraced. I prefer continental antique furniture made out of walnut that now has a rich and imperfect patina, with perhaps inlay and carvings that are far from the minimalist pieces my parents gravitated towards.'

She adds, 'It is hard for me to say that I hate the 1960s style that was so prevalent during my early childhood, as I have so many fond memories associated with this style, but I have certainly found my preferences in a softer, more soothing palette embracing history and a more timeless design aesthetic.'

2. Generation X (born 1965-1980)

Similarly to the retro kitsch vibes that defined the latter end of the Baby Boomer period, Generation X embraced all things colorful, loud, and a little garish. Liz was born in this generation and says (like Debbie and many others) she dislikes the 'harvest gold, avocado green, and rust – the appliance colors that set the tone for the rest of the home in the ‘70s. While I like some of these colors on their own, together they are too earthy. Wall-to-wall shag carpet and oversized TV consoles also come to mind as something I don't miss.'

Kitsch kitchen trends dominated this era, including overly bright colors and stark finishes. The seventies were a time when industrial, man-made materials took center stage, so it makes sense that so many designers from this generation avoid such looks. Gretchen Rivera, Principal Designer at Casa Casual studio, was born in this generation and explains that many of these things make a home look dated in 2025. She says, 'I dislike what’s generally called “faux luxury” or “decorative inauthenticity,” a style that imitates rather than originates. I have no patience for what is known as fast furniture – cheap, trendy, and disposable pieces that contribute nothing to a sense of permanence or integrity in a space.'

Gretchen continues, 'A lot of us in Generation X came of age in plastic wood-paneled basements with fake plants and Corinthian Leather upholstered seats, eating microwaved pasta out of stained Tupperware with MTV playing in the background. We saw firsthand how suburban sprawl replaced craftsmanship with convenience, how the malls and model homes of the ‘80s and ‘90s prioritized appearance over substance. We grew up as skeptics in the shadow of mass marketing and learned to spot what was fake from a mile away. The nostalgia of Generation X isn’t for distressed barn wood bought new. It’s for things that earned their look and finish the hard way.'

It seems Generation X has been traumatized by all things fake and inauthentic. Jan Jan Odesanya from Mondän & Co Interiors agrees, saying, 'We were sold the dream of Tuscan kitchens, red feature walls, and espresso-stained everything. Many of us are still living with the fallout – quite literally. My take: We’ve outgrown the drama. These days, it’s all about light oak, quiet tones, and letting the materials speak. No more proving anything with fake columns or heavy granite slabs.'

3. Millennials (born 1981-1996)

Although some 1980s interior design trends have been revived recently, many of the most distinguishable styles of this decade are hated by interior designers who lived through it. It's not just the 1980s that are filled with rookie design mistakes; there are plenty of styles Millennials hate from the succeeding decade, too.

Liz says, 'Most design in the 80s was overdone – elaborate window treatments, massive furniture sets, and bulky entertainment centers. Millennial clients usually want cleaner lines, more airiness, less clutter, and rooms that feel personal but not fussy.'

Interior designer Nicole Casella, from Febal Casa, a leading Italian home design brand, says, 'As a Millennial interior designer, I’ve always gravitated toward spaces that feel intentional, balanced, and connected to personal lifestyle. One of the styles I personally struggle with is overly themed decor – think beach houses filled with seashell everything or rustic spaces overloaded with “farmhouse” signs. It tends to feel forced and often lacks the elegance that makes a home timeless. I believe a home should reflect the people who live there – not just a Pinterest board.'

Although some 1980s colors are making a comeback in 2025, Jan says she's not a fan of the gray that dominated the late 1980s and 1990s. Explaining her dislike towards archetypal 1990s interior design trends, Jan says, 'Gray. So much gray. Floors, sofas, walls – all in that one cool-toned hue that made everything feel like a dentist’s office. My take: The rebellion is underway. I’m seeing a craving for color again – mustard, rust, forest green, anything to bring the warmth back. The “Live Laugh Love” signs are finally coming down, and good riddance.'

4. Generation Z (born 1997-2012)

Many 1990s trends creep into Generation Z, so it seems only fitting that many of us (I'm a proud Gen Z member) steer clear of defining styles like gray shades, mirrored surfaces, and anything overly pastiche.

Liz says, 'My children are part of Gen Z, and I’ve noticed some fatigue around the all-gray, farmhouse-everything look. Shiplap walls and barn doors are feeling a little overdone. This group wants more color, individuality, and a bit of vintage charm. They're confident mixing styles and aren’t afraid to take risks.'

Transitional design is all the rage among my generation (myself included) as it embraces all things well-made and eclectic without straying too far into one style. Nicole agrees, saying, 'Millennials and Gen Z clients increasingly dislike “fast furniture” and disposable decor. They prefer investing in fewer, higher-quality pieces with a story behind them – Italian craftsmanship, for example, always resonates.'

Jan says her Gen Z clients are 'Bold. Brave. And occasionally… totally overwhelmed. Their spaces are a mashup of blob mirrors, checkerboard rugs, and neon signs. It’s expressive, sure – but sometimes it’s chaos in disguise. My take: Editing is the new luxury. A well-designed space shouldn’t feel like an algorithm. You don’t need to reference every micro-trend to prove you’ve got taste.'

There are so many interior design styles that have defined the past four generations. While retro colors and industrial materials dominated the middle of the 20th century, pastiche rustic-style looks dominated the latter half. Despite many of these distinct styles serving as examples of what not to do, the past 80 years of interior design has been an ever-evolving journey that showcases the endless possibilities of creativity and curation.

I like to cook my beetroot by placing them in a baking dish (we love the Staub rectangular baking dish set, which comes in lots of colors and is currently on sale) half-filled with water. Cover the dish well with foil and bake at 425°F until they are easily pierced with a knife. This takes about 1 hour – longer if your beets are particularly large. Peel while they’re still warm and continue with the recipe.

Ingredients (serves 4-6 as a mezze)

• 1lb 2oz cooked beets, cut into ¾in cubes
• 4 scallions, trimmed (2¼oz)
• 2 tsp olive oil
• 1 tsp black and white sesame seeds, toasted, to serve
• fine sea salt
• For the dressing:
• 1¼oz plain yogurt
• 1oz tahini
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• 1½ tsp lime juice
• 1 tsp maple syrup
• 1 tsp toasted sesame oil, plus ½ tsp extra to serve
• 1 tbsp water

The Homes & Gardens method

1. First make the dressing by whisking all the ingredients together in a medium bowl with ½ teaspoon of salt.
2. Stir in the cooked beetroot and set aside to marinate while you char the scallions.
3. Heat a large skillet (we recommend the Made In Stainless Clad Frying Pan) over a high heat. Toss the scallions with 1 teaspoon of the oil and a tiny pinch of salt and add them to the hot pan, then weigh them down with a saucepan that has a base slightly smaller than the skillet.
4. Char for 2 minutes, then remove the saucepan, flip the scallions over and repeat to char the other side for 1–2 minutes more; you want them softened and browned in places. Set aside to cool.
5. Transfer the beetroot mixture to a serving bowl, drizzle with the extra sesame oil and sprinkle over the sesame seeds.
6. Toss the scallions with the remaining teaspoon of olive oil, then pile these on top and serve at room temperature.

Be it a particular piece of furniture or a specific design element, every designer has that 'secret sauce' they swear by for a harmonious space that looks perfectly polished. Think of it as the icing on the cake – the one detail that makes a room look finished, pulling all the other threads together for an expertly curated home. It's something they rely on time and time again, no matter which interior design trends happen to ebb and flow.

While that's all well and good, professional designers are just that – professionals. Without their toolkit and prowess, how can we be expected to pull off the same tricks? Well, to help you on your way to creating a stylish home with designer-level details, I spoke with designers Martha Mulholland and Nicky Mudie to find out which pieces they always recommend to their clients to tie a look together.

1. Pillows and throws

No room is complete without some soft textiles to warm the space and add texture (yes, that includes the kitchen). Be it beautiful, patterned upholstery, a scattering of throw pillows, or some simple drapes, using fabrics can be so effective. It's a finishing touch that offers a chance to introduce color and pattern when a room needs it most, helping to tie a scheme together.

From a practical perspective, the details will prevent your room from looking stark, cold, and unwelcoming. As Nicky Mudie explains, 'soft furnishings in layered fabrics and patterns give warmth, comfort, and a cohesive feel'.

For interior designer Martha Mulholland, accessories like tossed pillows are a recommendation for every client, no matter their style. 'These finishing touches give a space character and help it feel complete,' she says. Take the space above, for example, where the same patterns are carried through both beds and the window seat, creating a recurring motif for visual harmony.

You could also use your soft textiles to introduce an accent color that runs through your area rug, curtains, and sofa pillows. The added beauty of this idea? You can easily switch up the color or pattern through the seasons or as your style changes for minimal cost.

2. An area rug

If you have hard floors, an area rug is a non-negotiable to make a room feel complete. 'They anchor the space, define zones, and add texture and color,' says Nicky. Be intentional when choosing a rug, they might sit at floor level, but they take up a lot of visual space in a room. Is a natural jute rug more in tune with your minimalist decor style, or do you need to bring pattern to your floors to echo motifs in your wallpaper?

Designers swear by the right rug to pull a room together, and it shouldn't be an afterthought. In fact, as the very foundation of a room, you might want to build the rest of your room around one, choosing furniture that fits perfectly and decor in complementary colors and patterns.

Pay attention to rug placement rules, too (yes, it should go under your biggest pieces of furniture). This will ensure your space looks well-balanced and carefully considered. 'You'll need to go big, and even bigger than you think you need,' Nicky notes.

3. Antiques

Every space needs that one conversation piece that draws the eye. It has to be unique, intriguing, and full of character, something easily achieved when decorating with antiques. If you're looking for a home that's less homogenous and cookie-cutter and more eclectic and personal, add a vintage or antique heirloom to every room.

It's something Nicky always relies on to create a truly unique interior for her clients. 'A well-chosen vintage piece grounds the room and adds soul,' she says. 'It could be a chest of drawers, a side table, or even lighting.' Even a small tchotchke on a set of shelves could be the one piece that's needed to complete the perfect vignette. This attention to detail will imbue a space with character and offer a great springboard to inspire a wider decorating theme.

4. Accent lighting

Rule number one of the designer handbook: don't overlook your lighting. Far from being a mere functional tool, lighting can be the thing that pulls a whole room together.

You won't find a single designer in the world who settles for overhead lights alone. 'To make a room feel complete, you need to always include a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting,' says Nicky. 'Think ceiling lights, floor lamps, and table lamps.' Layering lighting in this way will create a room that feels warm and inviting with visual depth and dimension.

In spaces like the living room and bedroom, designers often advise clients to put an overhead light at the bottom of the priority list (even the kitchen is becoming less harshly lit, these days). Instead, the designer preference is side lighting with warmer bulbs.

'Prioritizing table and floor lamps rather than overheads, and fitting them with warm, dimmable bulbs, can entirely shift the mood of a space,' says Martha. 'Even a fairly simple room can become atmospheric with the right light.' Consider matching the finishes (be it a patterned shade or metallic brass) for a truly cohesive look.

5. Artwork and mirrors

There's nothing like a bland, bare wall to bring down a room's aesthetic. Even if the rest of the space is perfectly put-together, a gap on a wall will always make the room look as though it's lacking in some way. Decorating with artwork, however, you can pull the whole space together for a polished, refined appearance.

This is because art is usually hung exactly where the eye comes to rest, creating a hero focal point that anchors the room, 'and every room needs something to draw the eye,' Nicky tells me. Designers often recommend a vintage painting to draw guests in, but be wary that the size matters. In certain cases, a gallery wall made up of several smaller prints and paintings might be more appropriate, or perhaps a large tapestry is the best option to fill the space.

In fact, it doesn't have to be a piece of wall art or decor at all, says Nicky. 'Art brings personality and visual interest, but a mirror adds light and the illusion of more space,' she says, something that might be most beneficial in small rooms.

6. An accent chair

Some designers are adamant that every room needs seating, not just your living room. Adding an accent chair to an entryway, bedroom, or kitchen not only offers an opportunity to rest tired legs, but it also creates a beautiful design moment that helps pull a room together.

Usually, when we talk about cohesive, curated interiors, we think about common threads and motifs that feel safe and predictable. Sometimes, however, adding a piece of furniture that introduces an element of surprise or intrigue can be more effective, and accent chairs do just that.

Often, an unexpected design feature, a single chair, can make a great design statement that acts as the finishing touch in a space. 'Even in a small room, one sculptural or characterful chair can add balance and personality,' says Nicky. Think about adding a mid-century style leather chair to a bedroom full of soft textiles and heavy textures, for example, or a plush, patterned armchair in an otherwise neutral living room.

7. Scent

Finally, while not strictly a piece of decor, the power of a good home fragrance to tie a room together shouldn't be underestimated. Designers often recommend that clients find a scent that matches the room's mood to add an extra layer of detail that draws on another one of our senses. It's the perfect finishing touch to an expertly designed interior.

'Scent is often an overlooked detail that can elevate a space and has a remarkable impact on how one feels,' says Martha. 'A truly cohesive room isn’t just visually cohesive, it’s a multi-sensory affair: fabrics should feel sumptuous, light should be romantically soft, and the air should smell like something lovely. Designing with all five senses in mind is, to me, the real alchemy of interior design.'

The finishing touches in a room can be just as important as those big important decision you make early on. And I find this bit, the pulling together of a room, the most fun, the most creative. Brining in those small accents like pillows and candles and artwork is when I start to see a room really become mine.

I grudgingly grew accustomed to them until I discovered grilled beans and, to my delight, found a halfway point between not overly soft and not overly crunchy either. That and the char, which gives these beans a lovely smoky flavour. I just had to share this recipe for my Homes & Gardens exclusive, How I Host... with Noor Murad, and I hope you'll love it too.

Ingredients (serves 4 as a side)

• 1lb green beans, trimmed
• 1 tbsp olive oil, plus an extra 1 tbsp to serve
• 2½oz feta, roughly crumbled
• fine sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
• For the lemon dressing
• 1½ unwaxed lemons
• 5 tbsp olive oil
• 1 onion, finely chopped (6¼oz)
• 1 garlic clove, crushed
• ⅛ oz oregano leaves, roughly chopped
• ⅛ oz parsley leaves, roughly chopped
• 1 tsp maple syrup

The Homes & Gardens method

1. Place a griddle (grill) pan over a medium-high heat (or use a large cast-iron pan). We love this Le Creuset cast iron skinny grill from Williams Sonoma, plus it's pretty enough to serve straight to the table if you have a heat-proof mat.
2. In a large bowl, toss the beans with the tablespoon of oil, ½ teaspoon of salt and a good grind of pepper.
3. Once the pan is hot, add a third of the beans to the pan, spreading in a single layer, and cook for 5 minutes without turning. Carefully turn the beans over and cook for 3–4 minutes more or until charred and softened (don’t worry if they’re not perfectly charred).
4. Transfer to a tray to cool, then continue in this way with the remaining beans. Keep the griddle pan on the heat.
5. For the dressing, first cut the lemon half into five ¼in rounds, discarding any pips and grill for about a minute on each side, until browned but not overly charred.
6. Transfer to a cutting board and finely chop them, skins and all.
7. Add 2 tablespoons of the oil to a medium skillet and place over a medium-high heat. Once hot, add the onion, turn down the heat to medium and cook until softened and lightly browned, stirring occasionally, for about 12 minutes.
8. Remove from the pan and set aside to cool to room temperature, then stir in the chopped grilled lemon, garlic, herbs, maple syrup, remaining 3 tablespoons of oil, ¼ teaspoon of salt and a good grind of black pepper.
9. Juice the remaining lemon to get 1½ tablespoons of juice and then stir this in too.
10. To serve, spread half the charred beans on a large platter, sprinkle with half the feta and spoon over half the dressing.
11. Repeat with the remaining beans, feta and dressing and drizzle with the extra tablespoon of oil.

This fresh and zesty recipe pairs beautifully with fish. Try it with our fire-pit salmon, although you might want to skip the lemon relish in that recipe to avoid overkill, or make it with some of our summer salad recipes for an elevated summer feast.

Make sure your tomatoes are not overly ripe here – you want them to keep their shape when pan-frying. The maple syrup will really emphasise their sweetness which contrasts beautifully with the salty halloumi.

Ingredients (serves 4-6 as a side)

• 4 tablespoons olive oil
• 4 teaspoons maple syrup
• 6 medium-large vine tomatoes, cored and halved width-wise
• 3 tablespoons pine nuts (about 1¼ oz)
• 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped
• 2 tablespoons fresh oregano leaves, roughly chopped
• 2½ teaspoons za’atar
• 2 oz grated halloumi cheese (try the KitchenAid Gourmet grater from Amazon)
• 1¾ oz ricotta cheese
• Fine sea salt
• Freshly ground black pepper

1. Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and 2 teaspoons maple syrup to a large nonstick skillet (our kitchen editor, Lydia, recommends the HexClad Hybrid fry pan) over medium heat. Season the cut sides of half the tomatoes with ¼ teaspoon salt and a generous grind of black pepper.
2. Once the pan is hot, place the first batch of tomatoes cut-side down in a single layer. Sprinkle the tops with another pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for 10–12 minutes, until caramelized and deep golden on the bottom (raise heat slightly if needed).
3. Flip gently and cook for 2 more minutes on the other side. Remove as they’re ready, keeping their shape intact. Place cut-side up on a serving plate (we like this Ston Platter from West Elm, in Twilight to make the tomatoes stand out), and pour over any pan juices. Rinse and dry the pan.
4. Repeat with the second batch of tomatoes. Heat the pan again over medium to medium-high, and add 1 tablespoon olive oil and the remaining 2 teaspoons maple syrup. Season the remaining tomatoes with ¼ teaspoon salt and pepper, and cook them as before. Transfer to the plate once done. Rinse and dry the pan once more.
5. Return the clean pan to medium heat and add the remaining 2 tablespoons olive oil, pine nuts, and a tiny pinch of salt. Toast for 1½ to 2 minutes, stirring constantly, until they just start to turn golden.
6. Add the garlic and oregano and cook for 1 more minute, stirring, until fragrant and lightly golden. Remove from heat and stir in 2 teaspoons za’atar. Transfer to a small bowl to prevent overcooking.
7. In a small bowl, mix the grated halloumi and ricotta. Spoon this mixture over the plated tomatoes. Drizzle the pine nut mixture and oil over the top. Finish with a sprinkle of the remaining ½ teaspoon za’atar.

Serve this as part of a summer sharing feast or it makes a wonderful side to a meat dish. Try it alongside our best-ever grilled lamb or smoky chipotle chicken.

Warming, grounding, and surprisingly adaptable, decorating with brown is, of course, nothing new. But it's certainly having a moment, and we're seeing a big return to rich, enveloping brown paints like chocolate, espresso, and tobacco.

Luxurious and rich yet traditional at the same time, Little Greene's Ganache took me totally by surprise. And then I returned to it again and again for almost every room in my home.

My love for chocolate brown naturally started in the kitchen. Then it slowly crept its way into my wardrobe, and some of the chicest pieces I've bought recently have been wrapped in this sweet cocoa shade. But no one was more surprised than I to find myself drawn to its enveloping tones for my home, too.

'Chocolate brown shades are perfect for creating smart spaces that bring indulgence, comfort, and warmth to the home,' says Ruther Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene. 'With their earthy tones, rich chocolate browns are a subtle nod to nature and work wonderfully with natural materials such as stone, wood, wicker, and rattan finishes.'

It shares the versatility of black but with a warm, welcoming undertone and inherently luxe feel. And what makes Ganache especially appealing is its softness. Unlike black, it doesn’t dominate; instead, it enhances whatever it’s paired with.

'Brown is a great tone to incorporate in your space. It's moody, it's cozy, and it looks good in both neutral rooms and colorful spaces,' said designer Taylor Simon in a recent TikTok video. 'It provides a deep, moody color without being too stark like black, while still providing great contrast against lighter walls,' she explained.

With a nod toward retro color schemes, it can feel delightfully nostalgic yet still sits just as lovely in contemporary spaces as it does amongst more traditional interior design styles.

As a long-term neutral lover, I've been slowly trying to lean into bolder colors in my current home. It is Edwardian with tall ceilings and full of character, so it can handle a little fun! I color drenched my living room in Farrow & Ball's Parma Gray (a misleading name, it hasn't a hint of gray within it) and then needed to find a complementary color for the fireplace.

After consulting with the experts – I even asked for Farrow & Ball's tips on decorating my blue living room – I learned that browny-red tones would work beautifully, and the winning swatch was unsurprisingly Ganache, seen above in my work-in-progress living room.

The next victim was my staircase. It's a big surface area, and the chosen color would be in your sightline immediately from the front door through to the dining room, living room, and all of upstairs. So it had to be perfect.

Leaning into the colors in my Victorian-style mosaic entryway floor – which as you can see above has tones of traditional brick red, butter yellow, brown, and black – I wanted to pick something that would feel contemporary, cool, but also work with a traditional palette. A hard brief.

I chose to pick out the brown in the tiles, giving the stairs a glossy, chocolatey wash of paint that somehow feels equal parts traditional (like a rich mahogany wood might) and stylish at the same time.

People often think of dark colors as dramatic or moody, but they can also be wonderfully grounding. If you balance them with lighter elements and tactile finishes, they bring real depth to a scheme, just like the nightstand in this neutral bedroom designed by Emma Ainsbough above.

'When used across all elements, they can really envelop a space, adding impact and drama to a space as well as partnering beautifully with neutral hues and natural finishes for a tonal contrast,' Ruth adds. 'Try color drenching Ganache in a scheme across walls, woodwork, and the ceiling for a truly impactful, cozy finish.'

In my case, Ganache has become the 'red thread' that tied everything together – from the living room to the hallway, to unexpected spaces like the cupboard in the corner of my kitchen and a bar cart in my dining room. It's now my go-to hue for making a space feel warm, layered, and with the right amount of contrast.

Ingredients (serves 16)

• Meringue Layers (Makes 3 layers)
  • 10 large egg whites
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ cup light brown sugar (firmly packed)
  • ¾ cup + 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2¼ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • Seeds from 1 vanilla bean or 2 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp white wine vinegar
• To Assemble
  • 3¾ cups heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • Seeds from 1 vanilla bean or 2 tsp vanilla bean paste or vanilla extract
  • 1½ lbs mixed summer berries (such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries), hulled and/or halved
  • ⅓ cup chopped pistachios (nibbed or shelled and unsalted)
  • 1 oz dark chocolate, finely shaved or grated

The Homes & Gardens method

1. Make the meringue: Preheat your oven to 285°F (265°F if using convection). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
2. In a large mixing bowl (these KitchenAid Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls from Amazon are ideal), beat the egg whites, salt, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until stiff peaks form.
3. Add dry ingredients: Sift the powdered sugar and cornstarch over the meringue mixture.
4. Continue whisking with one of the best hand mixers for another 3–4 minutes, until the mixture is very stiff and glossy. Beat in the vanilla and white wine vinegar to finish.
5. Shape the meringue layers: Spoon about one-third of the mixture onto one of the prepared baking sheets, shaping it into a swirled disc about 10 inches (5–6 cm high).
6. Use the remaining meringue to make two 8-inch discs and one 5–6 inch disc on the other tray. Use any leftover meringue to pipe or spoon small meringue “kisses” around the edges.
7. Bake: Bake for about 1 hour, until the meringues are dry to the touch and crisp on the outside, but still pale.
8. Cool: Turn the oven off, prop the door open slightly, and let the meringues cool in the oven for about 30 minutes. Then remove them and let them cool completely.
9. Whip the cream: In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until soft, billowy peaks form. Do not overwhip.
10. Build the layers: Place the largest meringue disc on a serving platter. Spread with a layer of whipped cream and top with an even layer of mixed berries.
11. Add a medium disc, more cream, more berries. Repeat with the second medium disc, and then the smallest disc, finishing with a generous pile of cream and berries on top.
12. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle with chopped pistachios and finely grate dark chocolate over the top. Serve any extra mini meringues on the side.

But while I'd made great decisions on finding the right tiles, the perfect paint color, the $10 vintage sconces I tracked down on Facebook... I'd overlooked one crucial detail: bathroom storage. And once I started living in the space, I quickly realized just how impractical it was not to have a designated place to keep all my bathroom essentials tucked out of sight.

With just a chic shower niche to work with and a pedestal sink with no drawers or cabinet, my beautifully finished bathroom has quickly been overrun by beauty products, cleaning supplies, and errant toilet paper. So what was the solution to this bathroom design mistake?

Sure, there are plenty of routes I could've taken here. But rather than ripping anything out to add a bathroom vanity (I don't have the space) or bringing in a wall or freestanding bathroom cabinet (ditto), I decided to work with what I had.

So while my pedestal sink looked pretty, it certainly wasn't delivering on storage. I realized there was a way to give it a little more purpose. After some initial research, I thought I'd solved all my problems with this Farmhouse-style under-sink cabinet from Wayfair that just slots on, but it felt too cumbersome and encroached on the toilet too much in my small bathroom – if you have room, however, this is a great choice.

Turning to Pinterest for inspo, I instantly fell for the sink skirt. And while you might think that it's merely a cafe curtain added for aesthetics, hiding beneath it is a simple shelf system that wraps neatly around the pedestal base and creates plenty of space for baskets, bottles, and beauty.

The bathroom is inherently a functional space, filled with plenty of easy-clean hard surfaces. But that doesn't mean it can't be softened with a little whimsy. A sink skirt, made from gathered fabric, is a brilliant way to introduce pattern, print, and color to your bathroom.

To create your own skirt, there are a few options available. You can buy lengths of fabric and make your own curtain by creating a small pocket at the top and threading through a Net Curtain Cord from Amazon, or adding VELCRO Sticky Back for Fabrics from Walmart to attach it. Alternatively, you can turn to Etsy, where there are loads of sellers who will make you a beautiful custom curtain to your measurements.

One of my favorite hacks to avoid the hefty cost of fabric lengths is to buy a tablecloth instead. I did this for an open cabinet in my kitchen and used a brass curtain pole to create a pretty gingham cafe curtain, and used a different tablecloth to create my sink skirt with some velcro. It is a great way to find unique and beautiful fabrics without having to spend a fortune per metre, just be sure to check the measurements before ordering!

Now that the sink skirt is in place, the bathroom feels so much more considered. I finally have a home for my overflow of skincare – and it’s all hidden behind a pretty curtain that actually adds texture and color to the space.

It’s a small DIY update, but a budget-friendly, easy one that has made a big difference in both the function and feel of the room, and makes the room feel more designed than it did before. I just wish I'd done it sooner.

Sometimes it’s only by living in a space that you figure out what’s missing – and that’s okay. Slow renovating gives you the benefit of sitting back and assessing each project as you go, affording you the luxury of pivoting, making mistakes, and finding fun ways to fix them.

By making a small, thoughtful addition after the fact, I’ve turned a design oversight into a feature that actually improves the space. It’s a good reminder that a home is never truly finished; there are always improvements to be made even in the smallest of spaces.

It is all about the textures in this summer lunch recipe. Think thin slices of pickled vegetables paired with creamed homemade ricotta. Making ricotta is ridiculously simple. The trick is full-fat milk of the best quality you can find, definitely organic if possible.

The pickling liquor recipe is all about the balance of sugar, vinegar and salt. The spices used can be played with. You can adjust the vegetable quantities or substitute with others like radish, cauliflower florets, or cucumbers, based on availability. Decorate with lots of pea shoots or any other herbs that are handy.

Ingredients

• For the Pickling Liquid:
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar (or white vinegar, if preferred)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 whole star anise
  • 1 teaspoon each: ground cumin, fennel seeds, yellow mustard seeds
  • Zest of 1/2 an orange
  • 1 small red chili pepper, thinly sliced (or 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes as a substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
• For the Pickled Vegetables:
  • 8 baby beets, trimmed and peeled
  • 8 baby carrots, peeled
  • 8 small fennel bulbs, trimmed and sliced

The Homes & Gardens method

1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add all the dry spices (such as mustard seeds, cumin, fennel, star anise, chili flakes, orange zest).
2. Once the spices become fragrant (after a minute or two), add the sugar, apple cider vinegar and salt.
3. Simmer gently and reduce until the mixture is syrupy — this should take about 30 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, peel the carrots and beets. Using a mandoline (we like the OXO Good Grips Mandoline Slicer from Amazon) or sharp knife, slice all vegetables as thinly as possible.
5. Add the sliced vegetables to the warm pickling liquid and let them steep for 30 minutes. They should soften slightly while keeping a bit of crunch.
6. While you're waiting, in a large pot, bring the milk to a gentle boil, stirring often so it doesn’t scorch.
7. Once it begins to boil, remove from heat and immediately stir in the apple cider vinegar, salt and lemon juice. The milk should curdle almost immediately. Let it cool for 20 minutes.
8. Line a sieve or colander (the Tramontina Gourmet Stainless Steel Colander Set from Amazon is ideal) with cheesecloth (or any clean, thin kitchen towel), and scoop the curds into it.
9. Bring the edges of the cloth together to help it drain. Let it sit for about 1 hour, or until it reaches your preferred consistency.
10. To Serve, arrange the pickled vegetables and ricotta on a large serving platter. Avoid tossing, as the beet juice may stain everything bright pink. Serve chilled or at room temperature.

Side dishes shouldn't be an after-thought, but something that elevates the main course with complementary flavors, colors and textures. 2. Remove the foil, stir in the butter and 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, then return to the oven for another 10–15 minutes, until the beets are beginning to brown.
3. Meanwhile, place the quinoa in a saucepan (we're fans of the HexClad Hybrid non-stick saucepans from Amazon) with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil, let it bubble for a couple of minutes, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for about 20 minutes, until all the water is absorbed and the quinoa is tender but still slightly firm to the bite.
4. Prepare the vegetables: Thinly slice the runner beans on the diagonal. Blanch them in boiling water for 2 minutes, then drain and rinse under cold water to stop the cooking. Drain again.
5. Blanch the broad beans in boiling water for 2 minutes, then rinse under cold water. Slip off the pale green skins to reveal the bright green beans inside.
6. Assemble the dish: Gently fold together the roasted beets (along with any juices from the pan), cooked quinoa, runner beans, and broad beans. Add a pinch of fresh thyme leaves, the remaining 2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar, and the extra virgin olive oil. Serve at room temperature.

A whole salmon always makes an impressive centerpiece for a meal – even more so when cooked (enclosed in paper) over a fire pit or best grill.

To check that the firepit salmon is ready without unwrapping it too much, insert a sharp skewer (try these OXO Good Grips Stainless Steel Grilling Skewers from Amazon) into the thickest part, just behind the head. Leave it for a few seconds, then remove and touch to your lip. If it’s hot, the fish is cooked.

Ingredients (serves 8, generously)

• For the lemon relish:
  • 3 preserved lemons, drained and quartered
  • Handful of flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 2.5 oz green olives, stoned and chopped
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
• For the salmon:
  • 1 lemon, sliced into rounds
  • 1 bunch dill, chopped
  • 5.3lb whole salmon, gutted
  • Salt and black pepper

1. To make the relish, combine all the ingredients in a small dish. (The quantities are small as the powerful flavour of the relish means you only need a little.) Set aside. 
2. Stuff the lemon slices and dill into the salmon cavity, seasoning well. Lay out a large sheet of baking paper and put the salmon on top. Wrap up tightly, twisting the ends. 
3. Prepare your fire or grill. At this point, it’s sensible to work outdoors. Take 12 sheets of brown paper or 12 double broadsheet newspaper pages, arrange them into layers of 2-3 sheets/pages and thoroughly soak with water. Wrap each damp layer around the salmon, finishing with a further slosh of water, then wrap the whole lot in a piece of wet hessian and tie into a neat parcel. Try these reuseable grill bags from Amazon if you don't have any hessian.
4. The fire or grill embers should be ashen, with no hint of flame remaining. Carefully place one small, wet log on the coals and cover with the metal grate. Lay the salmon parcel on top and cover with the barbecue lid or a metal trash can lid for a fire pit. 
5. Leave to cook for 50-60 minutes, depending on the size of the fish, until the salmon flesh is just cooked. Alternatively, wrap the stuffed fish in one layer of non-stick baking paper and one layer of foil and bake in an oven pre-heated to 180°C, gas mark 4, for 50 minutes, or until the fish just flakes when pressed. 
6. Unwrap carefully and transfer to a platter. Serve with the relish.

Despite being a more traditional kitchen feature, pot rails can transform a newly-built, stark space and give it a dose of character and patina (not to mention they're a nifty kitchen storage idea too). They are also easy to install, no demo needed, and I have found some really affordable options – this was the quick and affordable update my kitchen was in need of.

Taking inspiration from the past, Shea is embracing more traditional kitchen features. In her Instagram post, Shea said, 'Kitchen trends come and go, but some elements never go out of style. We’re spotlighting a few we’re loving right now: Unique countertop edge profiles, integrated sink drains, pot rails as backsplashes, built-in plate racks, and sculleries and butler pantries.'

Each feature can make all the difference to a new kitchen and brings a sense of history, age, and heritage that's so important in this space. However, I love the simplicity of the pot rail. It's a kitchen feature that costs little to invest in, it's fuss-free and easy to fit onto a wall, and it makes a surprising amount of impact, framing a backsplash while still being neatly tucked away.

On Shea's blog, the Studio McGee team shares more thoughts on the fixture; 'We’re loving seeing and using pot rails as a backsplash feature. Spanning nearly the length of the range, this kitchen trend provides the opportunity to bring in some character through styling.'

A feature that Shea has been loving, pot rails are a kitchen hardware trend that I don't see departing anytime soon. They are small but mighty and can transform an empty area into a charming display that radiates all things rustic.

While packing, I've been taking a long, hard look at what counts as essential for a home in 2025, and my decisions are surprising me. Things I thought were key to a happy life are no longer needed, while some things many would think were unnecessary are, in fact, important to the way my new, smaller rooms look and feel.

I've been learning about what are the design essentials every home needs (and these are coming with me in this move), and the things that I definitely don't need, especially when space is tighter.

The non-essentials I am ditching in this move

Over the years, designers have told me these pieces were essential, and I believed them. But now I am moving into a home where space is tighter, I have realized these pieces are a bit of a luxury – a definite non-essential.

1. A home office sofa

At one point, surely after COVID, a sofa was a home office essential. We were all spending so much time on video calls that a relaxed seating option was a necessity. But, surprise, surprise, mine has just become a dumping ground for mail, clean laundry, discarded sweaters, and bits of old envelopes that have important work notes scribbled on them. The only one who actually sits on it is my cat. So it's going, unable to justify its position in the removal van.

2. A bed-end bench

It's what hotels do, right? A cushioned bench at the end of the bed, somewhere to sit in comfort as you gather your thoughts or dry your hair or wait for your partner to finish getting ready. But, like my office sofa, it just became a place for half-worn clothes or laundry that needed to be put away, anything but relaxing to look at. It's gone.

3. Entryway seating

You may be sensing a theme here, but yes, the bench in my entryway, has become less a place to sit and calmly put my shoes on, as it is a place to throw mail, bags, and coats the moment I walk in the door. Entryways are meant to be pass-throughs; they were never designed to be places to linger. So get rid of any seating and swap for a console so you can actually get in some entryway storage, as well as a nice spot to style some vignettes.

The design essentials coming with me

These are the pieces that have survived my stringent decluttering for downsizing and will be making their way to my next home.

1. A comfy and stylish office chair

Osteopaths look away now, as I'm sure this flies in the face of all Health and Safety wisdom, but in light of not having an office sofa, I'm clinging even more firmly to my comfy office chair.

I've requisitioned one of my velvet dining chairs for the job. It's not ergonomic, it doesn't swivel, but it does have a high back and so offers some level of support. Essential for the piece of furniture I use more than probably anything else in my home.

2. A characterful collection of crockery

My glassware and mug collection are both being thinned down. Anything that isn't part of a set, anything that is not a favorite, is going (so much less to bubble wrap). But my bowls and plates? Particularly my salad bowls? They're staying. Loved and collected over time, they bring real character and charm to the table. You can always buy new glassware, but you can't buy that one salad bowl you've had for years and that still brings character to a kitchen every time I've moved house.

3. Verstile throw pillows

I'd fallen out of love with couch pillows lately. Two boisterous puppies had chewed all mine up, and moving them out of reach each day to bring them back down in the evening under supervision was too much like hard work. But since my dogs have calmed down, I've reintroduced them, reminding myself how a little pop of color goes a long way. Yes, they're bulky to pack, but yes, they're staying.

4. Chic candlesticks

Ok, but hear me out. Yes I think candlesticks are essential. Instant ambience creators, turning a dinner into A Dinner, or bath time into A Soak. Or, of course, in a power outage, you'll be so glad you have plenty of vessels to house your candles. Plus, they're tall and skinny and really easy to wrap. So while my unlit scented candles are going, my candlesticks – and the candles that go in them – are staying.

5. Timeless vases

Ok, so this has been harder to justify, as even the tiniest of my vessels needs a lot of bubble wrap (and therefore a lot of space in a packing box) to ensure it arrives in my new home safely. And while I probably ought to let them go (seriously, they're at three boxes now), I can't. Because placing them on a new shelf in a new house, or on the same dining table in a new dining room, makes the place feel like home. I think it's ok to have illogical loves of things just for their beauty, and for that to make them essential. Kind of essential, anyway. They're staying.

6. Decorative trays

If I were decluttering, surely I should declutter both the stuff that goes on my decorative tray and the tray itself. But I can't get rid of my vessels, and so I can't get rid of my tray, which helps to contain the objects and create a sense of order. Anyway, it's slim and mostly flat, so it packs like a dream.

I swear by trays as a decor essential because they really elevate a surface and make a vignette look more intentional. And they are so versatile, you can pop one on a coffee table or an ottoman for a spot to perch a drink or add one to the middle of a kitchen island to stack cookbooks and add a vase of flowers.

Clearly, my definition of essential wouldn't be the same as, say, Marie Kondo's. Unless you factor in that all these things bring me joy, or good back support in the case of that office chair. What I've really done is look at what is cluttering up my life (or being used as a vessel for clutter) and get rid of that, keeping only what makes me happy and will actually work in my smaller space.

When creating a memorable home, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach; what makes a home memorable will vary from person to person. For those who love to decorate boldly, vibrant color combinations and flamboyant wall coverings are all guaranteed to bring wow-factor and create a talking point.

That said, memorable doesn't have to mean maximalist. Sometimes less is more; indeed, minimalist spaces can command equal attention when designed well. In addition to color and pattern, architectural features can have a role to play, as can lighting and furniture choices. Artwork, too, can transform a room, while carefully curated collectibles, handcrafted and meaningful items, will all add unique character to a space.

Really, creating a memorable home is about designing a home that feels like you. So, whether you’re embarking on a complete redesign or simply want to bring more personality to an existing space, you’re in the right place, as we’ve rounded up an array of head-turning schemes and ideas to inspire, alongside some handy tips from top designers.

1. Add a whimsical wall mural

Exotic wall murals and wallpapers are a fabulous way to create magical, memorable spaces. Decorated in a beautiful hand-painted mural from De Gournay, this dining room instantly transports guests to an exuberant tropical jungle and makes for a memorable dinner setting.

To dial up the glamour, the designer, Courtnay Tartt Elias, founder of Creative Tonic Design, added a gloss ceiling and an elaborate chandelier, along with a luxurious antique table. Not only does this mural make a great talking point, it also holds personal significance for the owners, conjuring happy memories of travel and holidays.

'To make a home genuinely memorable, I like to start by getting to know the client on a deeper level – asking about their favorite travel destinations, meaningful memories, and even quirky family obsessions,' says Courtnay. 'This client loved Palm Beach and had an affinity for monkeys, so we worked with de Gournay wallpaper to customize and personalize details. It’s all about telling their story – that’s when a space becomes truly unforgettable!'

2. Embrace bold color combinations

Color is by far the easiest way to create instant impact in a room, and embracing contrasting colors within the same space will immediately command attention. When choosing a head-turning palette for a colorful room, take inspiration from the color wheel and go for two tones that sit opposite each other, as done here with a peach and green combination.

‘Color is a wonderful way to highlight or incorporate architectural details into your design schemes. Perhaps the bravest approach is combining contrasting colors, by using color blocks of contrasting mid-strength colors to create a dynamic and bold scheme,’ says Ruth Mottershead, creative director at Little Greene. Alternatively, ‘a tonal color combination, perhaps using a deeper shade of the same color, or a complementary color will create a softer, more harmonious interior.’

‘The elegant warm stone, Split Pink is a versatile shade that will radiate peachy warmth when paired with contrasting greens. Use above paneling in Harley Green and Livid to create a dynamic contrast that is both sophisticated and elegant.’

3. Go for a color drench

If you're looking to create a lasting impression, then you can't go wrong with a color-drenched scheme. Dark colors work particularly well in living rooms and snug rooms where you want to create an intimate feel, as demonstrated in this luxury living room by Storie Collective.

'We wanted this space to feel cocooned and intimate, with a sense of quiet luxury. The rich, saturated blue immediately creates mood, and the velvet wallcovering from Phillip Jeffries enhances that with its soft texture and subtle sheen,’ explains Sara Swabb, founder of Storie Collective. ‘It gently reflects light in a way that gives the walls depth and movement, especially in the evening, which wouldn’t be possible with flat paint alone. It’s both inviting and dramatic, which felt right for a room meant for retreat.’

Sometimes, the technique can actually help make small living rooms feel bigger, as the continuous use of color blurs boundaries between the walls and floor, and distracts from the size and shape of the room.

4. Layer patterned fabrics for a maximalist look

For a memorable, maximalist home, lean into layers and combine patterned fabrics in a range of designs and scales. If you’re a fan of English country interiors, then chintz and stripes are a go-to pairing.

'With florals and stripes, the trick is balancing the boldness of both designs while keeping the overall look cohesive. Start by picking one of the patterns to be the focus,’ says fabric designer Cinny. Here, Raine floral chintz is the star of the show, used generously on the curtains and bed canopy, while Arthur stripe makes the perfect coordinate. ‘A stripe helps make the room feel more modern and less fussy. Both these designs are equally bold, but the coordinating color palette helps tie them together and avoids them clashing.’

To dial up the look further still, embrace frills, ruffles and trims over curtains and soft furnishings for a flamboyant finishing touch. ‘I always tell clients not to be afraid of layers. Let the curtains be full, choose gathered silk lampshades for a soft, warm glow, and don’t forget the details like trims, braids, and little flourishes,’ says Henriette von Stockhausen. ‘Also include something unexpected, like a quirky object or a pop of color, to stop the space from feeling too 'done' or predictable.’

5. Embrace muted maximalism

If you’re cautious about decorating with color then fear not, as you don’t need to rely on bold hues to create a memorable home. Neutral tones can have just as much impact, as this scheme proves. In this powder room Sara Swabb of Storie Collective has channeled neutral maximalism by combining a leafy wallpaper by Martha Armitage with a striking marble sink, resulting in a space bursting with individuality.

‘A memorable home feels deeply personal and a little unexpected. I always encourage clients to choose one or two bold gestures in a space – maybe it’s a large-scale wallpaper in a powder room, a room cocooned in the same color, fabric or texture on the walls, or a quirky family heirloom on display. Even in neutral palettes, contrast in materiality or patina creates a lasting impact, such as in this project,’ explains Sara Swabb.

6. Create a statement ceiling

For so long, ceilings were ignored in interior design, but now they are being rediscovered as a fifth wall with many designers treating them as a canvas for creative paint effects and wallpapers. Whether teamed with bold walls as part of a maximalist interior or to make a talking point in a neutral room, decorative ceiling ideas are a great way to make a home more memorable. They can also serve as an optical device, helping to lead the eye upwards.

‘This room, which we call the den, is meant for lounging, TV watching, and kids playing video games, but it's open to the rest of the house, so we needed a way to make it feel cozy and intimate. Adding the wallpaper on the ceiling gives it a cocooned feel and adds pattern in an otherwise patternless room,’ says Corine Maggio, founder of CM Natural Designs. ‘The orange suede sofa was the perfect color to complement the blue in the drapery, and it also ties in the wallpaper, which has small bits of citrus notes in the flowers and butterfly wings.’

7. Hang personal artwork

Whether it’s a large piece above a sofa or a series of works hung as a gallery wall, thoughtfully chosen artwork, carefully framed and displayed, can make a room more memorable. When it comes to decorating with art, there are different approaches to take, explains interior designer, Henriette von Stockhausen.

‘Sometimes the client’s existing collection becomes the natural starting point, helping to define the color scheme or the overall vibe of a space. I love beginning with art, it offers such insight into a client’s personality, tastes, humour, and even their appetite for risk or restraint. It’s a great window into who they are,’ says Henriette von Stockhausen, founder of VSP Interiors. ‘Ideally, we begin with the art, but it’s not always practical to have the perfect piece lined up for every room from the outset. In those cases, we source artwork that complements the finished scheme.’

8. Curate a display of meaningful possessions and collectibles

Filling your interiors with things you love is what really puts the heart and soul into a home and makes it more memorable. Be it decorative objet d'art, family photos, handcrafted pieces, or antique collectibles, these pieces have stories to tell and help make your space unique.

'Layering things that are personal to you: travel souvenirs, heirloom pieces, and things that show your hobbies and interests. These kinds of things are unique to you and make your home more meaningful,' says Corine Maggio.

'These shelves are filled with pieces that are beautiful, functional, and deeply personal. There’s a jar of old dominoes we found at an antique street fair. A glass container holds personalized matches from our wedding, alongside a surprisingly heavy piece of the Golden Gate Bridge and a folded book I bought at my favorite coffee shop in San Diego, which also sold antiques. There are many books that have shaped us, and special coffee table books gifted or collected over the years.'

9. Create a feature floor

Sometimes bold wall treatments can be overpowering. If you prefer to keep a space neutral, but are still keen to inject personality to make a room more memorable, then a feature floor makes a great alternative. Whether it’s patterned floor tiles or a statement rug, making an impact underfoot is a clever way to create quiet drama. Here, Alexandra Azat, founder of Plaster & Patina, chose patterned floor tiles to bring life to this neutral kitchen.

'Our absolute favorite way to create a memorable space is through a custom, unique floor pattern,' says Alexandra Azat. 'Although we are all used to seeing wallpaper, it isn't the norm to have access to creating a completely customized, interesting floor. We created this completely customized encaustic floor here for this old Spanish home, creating a space that feels nostalgic yet incredibly updated and bespoke.'

When it comes to how to make a home memorable, there's no blueprint. Often, the most memorable homes are those that have unique charm and aptly reflect the personality of their owners. The key is to have fun and fill your home with the things you love.

'A memorable home does not shy away from showing the true personality of the homeowner,' says Naomi Dresser, principal designer and founder of Fig St. Design. 'Nothing shows the layers of life better than an authentic art collection, bold wallpaper patterns, and sentimental trinkets collected over the years.'

John Legend tried the recipe as he couldn't get this take-out family favorite on any delivery apps, and Chrissy, (and her followers), couldn't sound more delighted with the results, calling them 'delicious' when she posted a video of her husband's culinary creation on Instagram.

The good news is, they're really easy to make, especially if you use one of the best air fryers to cook your fries first.

If you're keen to follow in John Legend's footsteps and try your own 'fake-away' dinner, it makes for a perfect lazy weekend treat for the whole family. And I have the animal fries recipe he used right here, from Allyson Zea – aka Domestic Superhero.

Animal fries recipe

• TO MAKE THE SAUCE
• ½ cup mayonnaise (reduced fat or regular)
• 3 tbsp ketchup
• 1 tsp yellow mustard
• 1 tsp white vinegar
• 2 ½ tbsp sweet pickle relish
• dash of salt and black pepper
• Mix all in a bowl, then place in the fridge to combine the flavors.
• COOK THE FRENCH FRIES – make them from scratch or use frozen for ease. Throw them in the air fryer for quick cooking
• CARAMELIZE THE ONIONS (while the french fries are cooking)
• Add butter to a skillet (we love Field Company's cast iron skillet) then add chopped onions.
• Cook for 5 minutes over medium heat, sautéing.
• Add a pinch of salt and pepper, then cook 5 more minutes, sautéing while cooking. Once the onions are browned they are done.
• PRE-HEAT THE OVEN TO BROIL
• Spread the cooked french fries in an even layer on a baking sheet, like this Nordic Ware Naturals 3-piece set from Amazon, covered with parchment paper or foil.
• Add 4 slices of American cheese over the top of the fries. Place into the oven and broil for 5 minutes, watching it closely.
• Once the cheese is melted, they are done. *Broil time may vary based on your oven, so watch them carefully while they are cooking*
• Remove from oven, spread cooked onions over the top evenly. Spread the sauce over the top and eat immediately

Enjoy your animal fries on their own or sizzle some of your favorite burgers on one of the best grills and serve them together. Your family won't believe that you didn't call in at the take-out on the way home.

And, making this at home, like John Legend, is a great way to save some money on expensive food deliveries and will also ensure you know exactly what's gone into your food, particularly if you make the fries and sauces from scratch, too.

Rooms that all old homes once had and perhaps fell out of fashion are once more becoming all the rage. From larders to keeping rooms, these traditional spaces that were once a staple in classical architecture are popping up in interiors everywhere. While each has its own unique purpose and charm, there's one room that I couldn't be happier to see being factored into house designs of the moment – the sleeping porch.

The clue is in the name when it comes to this historic room. It's a space designed for the utmost relaxation during the warmer months, allowing you to bask in the warm breeze without taking a step outside.

What is a sleeping porch?

Described as 'a summer’s lullaby' by designer Bryan Graybill, a sleeping porch was once the perfect place for rest during the warmer months. Typically located within an extension of a property (namely the porch), a sleeping porch was a popular feature pre-aircon times, fusing outdoor and indoor living, creating a breezy spot to unwind.

It's a common room that older homes once had, but have fallen out of favor as air conditioning replaced the need for these cool, indoor/outdoor spaces. There's a bit of a medical history here too, as sleeping porches were encouraged in the Victorian era to ensure plenty of fresh air to stave off diseases like tuberculosis.

But today they are just a calming spot to feel the fresh cool air and still be surrounded by beautiful interiors, and designers say this dated feature is due a comeback.

Not to be confused with front porch ideas, sleeping porches are more elaborate in design, enclosed, usually with screen windows, and can sometimes feature on the first floor and stretch the whole length of the home.

How are designers incorporating sleeping porches today?

Sounds dreamy? We agree, so here we speak with designers who have embraced the sleeping porch and incorporated them into their modern-day remodels.

1. To create the most inviting of guest bedrooms

Sandra Cavallo, known for her account Old Silver Shed, created a dreamy sleeping porch in her Cape Cod home so she could gaze at the sea view. She said, 'When we designed our house on Cape Cod, we knew we would have a lot of guests (who doesn’t want to visit the Cape in the summer?) Though our home is a new build, we wanted it to look and feel like it has been here for a hundred years, so we were careful to study the old, shingle style beach cottages that dot the New England coast and incorporate some of the traditional design elements.'

Embracing the Cape Cod house style, Sandra added the porch to honor the traditional architecture. She said, 'I decided that our guest bedroom would be modeled after a classic sleeping porch, where people would sleep in the summer when the heat was oppressive.'

'The room faces southwest, so in summer there is always a light breeze. I kept the bedroom small and cozy, wrapped it with windows and doors to take advantage of the breeze. We used old exterior doors for the entry to make you feel like you were stepping outside. The rest of my home is a mix of modern and vintage, but the guestroom has a distinctly cottage feel, so my guests would enjoy a truly charming Cape Cod experience.'

2. To add character to a new build home

This coastal-style sleeping porch, designed by Carly Ahlman Design, feels refreshingly relaxing and serene. How much do you want to prop yourself in that bed with a book on a sundrenched afternoon?

'We love the inherently cozy feel that a sleeping porch creates,' says Carly. 'They are the perfect place for built-in beds for sleepovers or a sunny place to set up a workspace. We also love that these spaces are reminiscent of older homes that have enclosed porches – they are a great way to make a new construction home feel more charming.'

3. Too add extra space in an underused part of the home

Designed by Lauren Conner Interiors, this sleeping porch is not located in the traditional porch area of the home but instead sits in a former garage. The designer made use of the underused space attached to the home and transformed it into a relaxing and plush sleep space that feels cozy and connected to nature.

Lauren says, 'This former garage has been transformed into a laid-back game room and extra sleeping porch for the main lakehouse overflow. It’s a rustic, no-frills space with a charming camp vibe and plenty of vintage finds, many of them original to the cabin. The collection of maps documents different time periods of the lake. Think of it as indoor camping, but with the comfort of A/C and the bonus of games for some good old-fashioned fun.'

Sleeping porches are a timeless addition to a home, allowing you to enjoy fresh air and a garden view with utter ease and relaxation. A room every period home once had, they're a peaceful and elegant space that makes year-round lounging even more serene.

'A great event theme doesn’t have to be over-the-top – it just needs to be intentional,' says April Zorsky, Partner and Chief Creative Officer at Brigade Events. 'We always ask: what is the goal of your event? What do you want your guests to feel and remember when they leave? The most memorable gatherings start with a clear emotional vision that’s carried through in the details.'

The easiest inspiration for summer garden party decor ideas can be found in your garden. A rose garden is the perfect place for an elegant and romantic look; if blue hydrangeas are blooming, perhaps a Hamptons-themed party will suit; or, if you have hibiscus and palms in your garden, go for a tropical theme. Alternatively, you could host a festive event with a subtly patriotic color scheme and pull in some red, white and blue flowers to keep it natural.

I spoke to party planners and hosting experts for their tried and tested garden party themes and advice so that your upcoming summer events will go off with a bang. Plus I've added some of my favorite buys for getting the look.

1. All American – with a twist

If you're looking for July 4th party ideas or planning a party around a patriotic event such as Memorial Day, Labor Day, this is an easy go-to theme, but it doesn't have to be all-stars and stripes. There are some more subtle ways you can lend a nod to Americana through your decor.

'A patriotic theme can be stylishly executed with layered tones of red, white, and blue in varying shades and prints. Avoid the obvious and instead use gingham or ticking stripes for a more sophisticated look,' suggests Isabel.

You can incorporate this theme through your decorative florals, too, says Sabrina Cohen, event florist and founder of Neroli Blume: 'Muted shades of red, white, and blue, such as dusky pink roses, white scabiosa, and navy thistle, will give a touch of patriotism that feels both modern and sophisticated.'

Carry the colors through from the table to the decorations with bunting, scatter cushions on outdoor furniture and accessories for a cohesive look. Opt for picnic recipes to keep things relaxed and sociable – whether served at a table or out on the grass on a large blanket.

2. Oregon-style rustic and natural

'A rustic look leans into organic textures – think natural linen, raw wood, and terracotta, ' says interior designer, Isabel Jackson, DC-based luxury interior designer and founder of Cheltenham Interiors.

The key is to make it look natural, rather than overly styled. Your decorations should blend in with your yard design and the rustic look works better alongside wild or untamed schemes, as you might find at an Oregon cabin. Think re-claimed wood, weathered metals, eco-friendly elements and lots of native ferns and mosses.

Iryna Kolosvetova, styling expert and founder of Fine Dining 4 Home, says, 'I recommend layering soft linen runners with seasonal florals or herbs in low bowls, and mixing ceramic and wooden tableware for that rustic-elevated look.'

For a more vintage appeal, Adrian Aviles, Owner of Athletic Club Flower Shop suggests: 'use woven baskets, vintage tins, or old wooden crates to hold loose arrangements of wildflowers like Queen Anne’s lace, sunflowers, and scabiosa. • 12 quail eggs
• 1 lb good-quality lamb sausages (remove from casings if needed)
• Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
• 2 green onions, chopped
• 1 sheet (about 16 oz) ready-made all-butter shortcrust pastry
• All-purpose flour, for dusting
• 1 egg, beaten, for glazing
• Handful flat-leaf parsley, chopped
• Handful fresh mint leaves, chopped (optional if already in sausages)
• Sesame seeds, for sprinkling

The Homes & Gardens method

1. Cook the quail eggs: Lower the eggs into a small pan of gently simmering water and cook for 2 minutes. Remove and cool in cold water, then peel the shells off.
2. Prepare the filling: In a large bowl, mix together the lamb sausage meat, green onions, herbs, and chili flakes (if using). Set aside.
3. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Roll out the pastry on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out 12 rounds (3.5-inch diameter) to fit a standard 12-cup muffin tin, and 12 smaller rounds (about 2.75 inches) for the tops.
4. Assemble the pies: Line the muffin cups with the larger pastry rounds. Half-fill each with the sausage mixture, press in a quail egg, then top with another spoonful of sausage mix. Brush edges with beaten egg, cover with the smaller pastry rounds.
5. Seal and bake: Press the edges with a fork to seal. Cut a small hole in the top of each pie, brush tops with beaten egg, and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
6. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
7. Cool: Let cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

• For the terrine
  • 2 cups (500 ml) chicken stock
  • 1 1/2 sticks (200 g) unsalted butter
  • 2 small shallots, finely chopped
  • 1 small garlic clove, minced
  • 3 tsp fresh thyme
  • 10.5 oz (300 g) skinless, boneless chicken thighs, trimmed and diced
  • 3.5 oz (100 g) smoked chicken breast, diced
  • 7 oz (200 g) pork tenderloin, diced
  • 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • 1 tbsp tarragon, chopped
  • 2 lemons, finely zested only
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 12 oz (350 g) smoked streaky bacon
  • 1.5 oz (40 g) dried sour cherries

1. For the pickled cherries (Make these a few days ahead if possible):
2. In a small saucepan, bring the vinegar, sugar, sea salt, and saffron to a simmer. Stir for a minute or two, then remove from heat and let cool slightly.
3. Pour the warm brine over the halved cherries in a bowl. Let cool completely, then cover and refrigerate for 3 days before using.
4. For the terrine:
5. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Boil the chicken stock in a saucepan until reduced to half its volume (about 1 cup). Set aside.
6. In a wide skillet, melt the butter and gently sauté the shallots for 10 minutes, stirring often until very soft but not browned. Add the garlic and 2 teaspoons of thyme and cook for another 5 minutes.
7. In a large bowl, combine the cooked stock, shallot mixture, chicken thighs and breast, pork, pistachios, parsley, remaining thyme, tarragon, lemon zest, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently.
8. Line a loaf pan (8.5x4.5 in) with 12 strips of bacon, overlapping and laying across the base, letting the ends hang over the sides to fold over later.
9. Spoon half of the terrine mixture into the pan, pressing firmly. Sprinkle with dried sour cherries and cover with the remaining meat mixture. Fold the overhanging bacon over the top and lay 2 more strips of bacon across lengthwise to secure. Fold over the long sides of the bacon neatly. Tuck in the ends.
10. Wrap the entire terrine tightly in foil (or baking parchment and foil) and place into a deep roasting pan. Fill with boiling water until it comes halfway up the sides.
11. Bake for about 1 hour or until firm when gently pressed in the center.
12. Let cool in the pan, then remove the foil and wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Weigh down with cans or a weighted object and chill overnight.
13. Slice and serve with drained pickled cherries, salad greens, and toasted rustic bread.

‘Wallpaper can be such a fun incorporation into any room, so my top tip, first and foremost, is to go bold and have fun with it!' Sean advises

'Getting the scale of the wallpaper print is the next most important thing; if a scale is not right for the space, it may have the opposite effect on how you want to accentuate the room. Then, pick a design that has color dimension to it, that’s really how to make something timeless and not tire of it.'

'This way, the wallpaper becomes more of a backdrop, quietly tying the room together rather than dominating and being the main focal point, allowing your interior choices to evolve around it and shift the mood of the space over time.’

Kentucky-based interior designer Jen Bienvenu also thinks you can't go wrong with small-scale prints, but her preference is more abstract.

'Veere Grenney’s Folly wallpaper for Schumacher is right up there with my favorite wallpapers,' says Jen. 'Chintz and floral patterns follow a cyclical cycle of falling in and out of fashion, but Grenney’s Folly pattern has real staying power.'

'Reminiscent of coral, it’s one of my favorites because of its versatility. It feels at home in both large and small application settings. It can read geometric or floral based on its movement. And depending on the colorway, it can read coastal or find itself at home applied to the walls of a cabin in the woods.'

'When I study this paper, I’m unsure of what organic shapes I’m staring at. Is it more sea-like or twig-like? Either way, it has that mysterious quality that draws us into our appreciation for the world.'

'I never tire of decorating with stripes,' says Fiona Duke. 'And the Estelle wallpaper by Sandberg wallpaper brings vibrancy and happiness in abundance. While vintage and antique stores offer a host of pieces, the beauty of thrift stores is the sheer array of pieces they offer for a lesser price. From decorative mirrors to collectible ceramics, amongst the many rows of unassuming decor, you'll find one-of-a-kind objects that can entirely transform the home for not very much money.

I asked designers which pieces to look out for, what items are guaranteed to make a home appear more curated and expensive, and they came back with these eight essentials.

1. Tableware and glassware

It's not hard to find tableware at a thrift store, and it's worth knowing that vintage tableware is often made by established makers, making it a timeless investment. It can make all the difference to a table arrangement or kitchen shelves, too, and bring a sense of sophistication and grandeur.

Sharing his tips on thrifting vintage glassware, Jacu Strauss, design, and creative director of Lore Group, says, 'My favorite items at thrift stores are real crystal glassware and silverware (cutlery in particular). I hardly ever buy new crystal for myself, and I buy used silver or silver-plated cutlery. It looks and feels so much nicer and just needs a little polish twice a year.'

If you've spotted a set in need of some care, swot up on how to polish flatware to give it a new lease of life. Similarly, you can remove cloudiness from drinking glasses, so always consider a set of tumblers or wine glasses at the thrift, even if they appear a little unloved.

2. Artwork

Thrift stores often stock a selection of art, be it hand-drawn prints, scenic landscapes, or vintage posters, so no matter your interior design style, there's likely to be something there for you. Thrifted artwork usually doesn't cost very much, and yet can really make a room look more expensive.

Thrifting is all about treasure-hunting,' says Sophie Salata, head of brand at Vinterior. 'It’s about unearthing the unexpected, the pieces that carry history, hold a story, and quietly elevate a space. Done right, thrifting is less about cost and more about character. So what’s worth checking out? Original art in vintage frames – moody landscapes, expressive portraits, or still lifes. The trick? Go for what grabs you and always think about the size and scale.'

Thrifting expert Rachel Leonard Kennedy has long been sourcing art for her home. She explains, 'When people walk into my home, the first thing they ask about is all the elegant painted portraits of (what they assume) are my relatives, on my walls! It’s the most fun conversation starter to tell them that my gallery wall of paintings is a total strangers I’ve rescued from thrift stores! If you can find original paintings and put them in similar frames, you can create a gallery wall that looks like it belongs in a museum. I’ve found paintings at thrift stores for as little as $2, and the most expensive one I’ve ever purchased was $120.'

3. Stoneware

Thrift stores are filled with pottery, from jugs to vases, you're pretty much guaranteed to find some kind of hand-thrown piece that oozes rustic charm. Decorating with vintage ceramics is a surprisingly chic way to design your home, too, whether you're creating a display of stoneware on a shelf or simply positioning a vintage vase at the center of a table.

Rachel says she always looks out for one specific pottery style at the thrift store. 'Stone and travertine vases, trays, and trinket bowls are very in vogue right now, and lend an expensive element to coffee tables, bedside tables, dining tables, or counter tops. Snag a natural stone bowl and pile with some lemons or clementines for an instant centerpiece that’s both budget-friendly and decor on-trend. Anything made with natural stone is typically expensive retail, and it’s a very popular material for designer decor right now.'

She adds, 'The best part is that this design trend has actually been around for decades, which means you can easily find stone or travertine pieces from the 80s and 90s that look like something you’d see in a modern decor boutique now. There are so many uses for an attractive stone bowl. I found a scalloped travertine bowl at a thrift store locally where I live for $7, and I keep it on my entryway table to dump my purse contents in when I get home. That way, when I leave the house again, I simply put the items from the bowl into the latest purse I’m using, and I’m out the door in seconds.'

4. Picture frames

Of course, decorating with vintage art is a classic way to make your home feel characterful and eclectic, but don't underestimate the power of vintage picture frames, as it's these often overlooked accessories that can elevate an image and make it appear both older and more expensive.

Thrift stores have an array of vintage art, so fear not if a painting doesn't speak to you, as the frame just might. An ornate gold frame or an intricately painted style can make your art feel much more interesting and eclectic, transforming an already pretty picture into a true work of art.

5. Trinket dishes

Trays and dishes are thrift store items that can transform a living room, so keep your eyes peeled next time you're shopping. These small but mighty accessories can uplift an empty surface and elevate even the simplest of arrangements.

For a grand look that feels timeless and sophisticated, Annie Harrison from Fare Inc. says to opt for, 'Silver trinket dishes can be used for dropping keys or styling on top of coffee table books for a layered, storied look.' Look out for silverware with a hallmark, as this is a sign the piece is made from authentic silver and will last for years to come.

Alternatively, for a less traditional look, a rustic rattan tray will give a coffee table an eclectic, curated feel that follows current trends while still feeling classically chic and elegant. Simply fill it with magazines and a bud vase, and you've got a simple yet expensive-looking arrangement.

6. Ceramics and china

You're guaranteed to find a shelf's worth of china at the thrift store. While some of it may edge a little towards the Grandmillennial decor aesthetic, it's not hard to find china that feels classic and timeless, designed by long-established makers.

There's a long list of dishware brands to shop second-hand, from Spode to English Creamware. It's useful to keep in mind iconic names when scouting for a set of cups, saucers, or dishes, as many of them can make a room feel more expensive, whether displayed as a collection in a dresser or used to set the table with when guests are over.

Interior designer Shani Core has long been thrifting gems to elevate her own home as well as her clients'. She says, 'My favorite collections to thrift include antique Majolica, Flow Blue, and any pretty, decorative antique porcelains with vibrant colors. These can be hung in a grouping on a wall, displayed on a console table, in a China cabinet, or in a pantry.'

7. Wooden furniture

Sourcing antique furniture at the thrift store may seem like a long shot, but you'd be surprised at the number of gifted pieces, particularly at the bigger branches. Quality pieces are often donated rather than thrown out, so don't rule out a trip to the thrift store when shopping for a vintage armchair, coffee table, or console.

Wooden furniture makes a scheme feel grander, older, and far more elegant and expensive compared to pieces made from synthetic materials, not to mention it's much more likely to last longer.

Shani says that the best furniture to buy at thrift stores will always be made from wood. She says, 'I’m always on the lookout for antique wood chairs, especially if they have intricate hand-carved wood details and unusual turned legs! I almost always reupholster them in something pretty with a contrast welt to update and make the cushions more comfortable. Pairs are great, but sometimes an odd random chair breaks up the symmetry in a room and makes it much more interesting!'

8. Mirrors

Mirrors can retail for high sums, particularly dramatic floor-length styles or gilded varieties. Not only is thrifting a mirror far more cost-effective, but you can often find antique and vintage styles that feel more interesting and decadent than some newer pieces.

Look out for mirrors with impressive frames or uniquely-shaped styles that would look stylish among other shapes, as these pieces will make your home feel not only eclectic, but well-considered and expensive.

Don't be put off by aged pieces either, in fact, interior designer Rebecca Hughes says you should embrace them. 'A large, decorative mirror can open up a room while adding a sense of history. I’m especially drawn to the unique patina and gentle foxing that naturally develops in old glass – it adds such charm.'

Annie Harrison from Fare Inc. also suggests always looking out for, 'Bronze patina framed mirrors or mirrors that are heavily foxed: more elegant and timeless than hand-painted metal finishes and factory applied antique finishes, so they look much more refined and authentic.'

I recently asked designers what one thing they thought always made a room look more expensive, more elevated and put together, and the answer was unanimous – hardware. Door knobs, cabinet handles and draw pulls, the feedback was that this small feature can make or break a home.

Although unassuming, hardware is an impactful accessory that strays from just kitchen cabinet hardware ideas and can pack plenty of punch when done well. Whether you're starting with an entirely blank canvas and giving a newly built home some character or you want to make your period property feel more authentic, a simple chic brass doorknob, vintage drawer pulls, or an ornate cabinet handle can make a room feel bespoke, sophisticated, and eternally chic.

'Hardware can really make a space,' interior designer and co-founder of Pierce & Ward, Emily Ward tells me. 'We always use it to add character to shelves with beautiful brackets and charm to new kitchens and antique furniture.'

Updating the hardware on your thrifted second-hand finds is one of the easiest ways to give them new life. I recently sourced a beautiful solid-wood dresser, but the handles were wood too, and I wanted to create a bit of interest. The table will be the anchor of the evening, but instead of aiming for anything overly formal, lean into relaxed and layered tablescaping that feels easy-going for summer.

'I like to let the beauty of the natural surroundings influence the look of a garden party,' agrees designer Kathy Kuo. 'Natural materials, organic color palettes, and plenty of floral accents are going to be perfect for setting the tone for a serene al fresco soiree.'

Throw the rulebook (and your sense of perfectionism) out the window and look to style a table that looks thoughtfully curated, but not as if it took all day to put together. Start with some outdoor table linens to add print and texture, add melamine plates, and acrylic 'glassware', and introduce some rattan tableware and fun flatware.

'I love a table that feels like it could only exist at that moment, in that garden. Vintage-inspired china in soft hues, heirloom silver, and a mix of gathered florals help the setting feel relaxed yet refined,' says Beth Helmstetter, Founder & Creative Director of Beth Helmstetter Events.

'I approach outdoor entertaining the same way I approach designing a home: every space should be intentional, inviting, and beautifully layered,' says Eli Mansur, Senior Event Producer at Kate & Co.

To create a bar, stock your cart with dispensers filled with spritz, plenty of break-proof glasses, and bowls of citrus slices and mint. Don't forget a few ice-filled buckets for bottles and cans. The result will feel eclectic, casual, and easy to rearrange as the evening evolves. The freedom to move things around keeps the energy of the party alive.

5. Curate your place settings

'Start with a layered foundation: a textured tablecloth or runner, charger plates, and curated flatware. Mix vintage and modern pieces for depth,' says Isabel Jackson, DC-based luxury interior designer and founder of Cheltenham Interiors

Don't worry about matching all of your plates and linens, in fact, mismatched prints, from ginghams to florals, and a mix of glassware can look really effective if you stick to a consistent color palette.

Sabrina Cohen, event florist and founder of Neroli Blume, suggests: 'Foraged greenery bundles or herb sprigs tied with velvet ribbon make delightful place markers, and watercolor name cards can add a lovely artisanal touch.'

This is your chance to really show off by getting creative with your spring tablescaping ideas. Write or paint on pebbles or seasonal fruits such as lemons as an alternative to place cards for example. It's the little things that will make your guests feel special.

'I’m drawn to tables that feel collected, not overly coordinated - tiny tailored details like handwritten menus or a single flower tucked at each place. It should feel like a beautiful moment waiting to unfold for each individual guest,' adds Beth Helmstetter.

6. Bring the indoors out

There’s something instantly magical about bringing indoor comforts into an outdoor setting. It softens the space and makes it feel more lived-in and luxurious.

Treat your garden like an outdoor living room and bring out some soft furnishings and accessories to create that same cozy, layered feel.

'For an instant garden party atmosphere, roll out an outdoor rug, string up some fun outdoor lights, add a fabulous tablecloth, perfect for bringing a touch of glamour to a weathered garden table, and pick a vase of flowers and garden greenery,' suggests Kit Kemp. 'You’re instantly ready to entertain friends and family in nature’s dining room.'

Rugs are the secret weapon of great outdoor styling. They add texture, and warmth, and help anchor your layout visually. Then I like to bring out cushions, add a basket filled with blankets for cooler moments, and place a few portable lamps on side tables. Candles with citronella add the finishing touch.

These little details don't just look pretty but encourage your guests to feel at home, kick off their shoes, and stay awhile.

7. Decorate chairs backs like a stylist

It's the extra details that will make your party really stand out and create a truly memorable experience for your guests and decorating chair backs is something that will set your garden party aside from the rest.

'Drape dried flowers, macramé tassels, or silk ribbons in your chosen color palette from the chair backs for a whimsical flair,' says Sabrina.

LALA Reimagined doesn't do things by halves. What are the ingredients for the perfect alfresco brunch?

Lia McNairy: The most perfect brunch is a combination of a perfect menu, a beautiful presentation, inviting the right people who are fun and ready to gossip and relax, and, of course, the weather. We live in LA, so it's pretty much perfect sunshine every day, but we have to look at the forecast when planning a brunch, especially if it's poolside.

Azar Fattahi: That's right, and we need to make sure there are umbrellas if it's too hot, which it usually is. Parasols are a must.

That's a lot of ingredients to get right. Let us start with the presentation. How would you dress the table?

AF: It's no secret that we're obsessed with curating tablescapes, vignettes, and decorative moments. Both of us pretty much have a warehouse each of plates, flatware, napkins, napkin holders, tablecloths, and runners. Literally an entire storage unit.

LM: So we dip into the vaults and decide our theme, usually based on a single color. Then we bring out all the things that work with that shade.

AF: At the moment we're drawn to purples, yellows, and greens. They're all rich in tone and so feel elevated when they come together, but there is a sunniness that comes from the yellow that helps people to relax and puts them in a fun brunch mood. And we love to mix and match. Every other plate along the table will be different.

LM: It's never a complete set. We'll pick out a dinner plate, a salad plate, and a dessert bowl, and layer them on top of each other as a setting. They won't be from the same set but they'll be in colors that complement each other somehow.

So it's quite a formal event? If you have salad plates and dinner plates...this is an event with several distinct courses.

LM: Oh, it's never formal. Never!

AF: People don't have to actually use the plates. It just helps to create a visual feast. You see the table all set and layered and you're drawn to it. It sets the right tone for a party.

What else goes onto the table alongside the dishes?

AF: I have an unnatural obsession with water glasses. I collect them in different colors, sizes, and shapes. So there is always a water glass for each guest, and always a wine glass.

LM: Azar only drinks water out of an amber carafe, and she usually buys 12 at a time. So we place them along the table so the guests can keep hydrated without having to get up - that has to be a key element to any brunch.

AF: There will also never not be flowers. We're very playful with them. One time we made a flower arrangement for a poolside brunch with artichokes, asparagus, and persimmon dotted in. Or we'll scatter as many kumquats as we can fit down the central table runner.

LM: Yes, and a beautiful purple or green bowl that we found in a flea market, filled with lemons that don't serve any purpose other than to look pretty!

AF: We make it hard for our guests to eat, honestly, but as soon as they see that bowl of lemons or a stack of pomegranates it sets the mood. You'll feel compelled to have fun conversations and gossip wildly when you're surrounded by explosions of beauty.

And what sort of food ends up on those layered plates?

LM: We definitely eat and serve seasonally, and start with whatever is fresh at the time. In Summer, we want a really vibrant palette of food, which we can create because there is so much wonderful produce around in LA at the time.

AF: On a platter of fresh, lightly grilled, and seasoned vegetables there has to be red, purple, yellow, and green. So we always choose purple carrots because they match the whole table scheme. Watermelon radishes are really pretty, served with a big bowl of lemon pasta for guests to help themselves.

LM: And a bottle of Sancerre. We'd never not have a bottle of Sancerre at a brunch. And playful mimosa garnished with flowers for guests on arrival. They put people at ease.

AF: We love freezing flower petals in ice cubes for the mimosas. So pretty.

What's on the playlist? There must be music, surely?

AF: There's always music. My go-to is a Bossanova playlist. Bossanova and brunch go hand in hand because it's subtly sexy and soothing and doesn't overpower the conversation. No one is ever going to break off a chat midway to say 'That's my favorite song!' when it's Bossanova, as it's not anything you need to focus on, but it just puts a little shimmy into peoples' demeanor.

If the brunch is by a pool, would you encourage guests to take a dip afterward? Once their food has gone down, of course!

LM: If it’s super hot I would definitely take my dress off and have a little dip but usually guests are so dressed up they don't want to. They might kick off their shoes and dangle their feet in the water though, and that helps add to the feeling of fiesta.

AF: With any good brunch, the energy you're trying to create is a feeling of being on vacation. Somewhere like Mallorca in the south of France. So encouraging a dip in the pool afterward helps to give that more holistic vacation feeling.

It would be all about soaking in that light. I'd set the scene with low, cozy seating, a few layered throws, vintage trays, and bowls scattered across the space. It’s laid-back but still thoughtful. There’s beauty in the mix and match, the natural textures, the way everything feels relaxed but still special.

Your aesthetic style is all about elevated relaxation, or liveable luxury. How do you carry this approach into an alfresco aperitivo hour?

The goal is simple: to craft a space that radiates warmth, beauty, and celebration – a setting for unforgettable drinks, laughter, and lasting memories.

I want everything to feel beautiful and effortless. That means soft textures, layered materials, and pieces that invite people to relax. It’s not about perfection. It’s about creating a space that holds you, where people feel good and stay a while.

What sort of colors might you gravitate towards?

I’m almost overwhelmed when it comes to colors right now. I’m drawn to warm, earthy tones like clay, olive, sand, and natural fabrics like linen or cotton. I love layering textures that have a bit of movement and personality.

I also adore yellows and rusts and pale greens with muted blues. I like to take a lavender and mix it with a little gray – there’s a softness here that is so easy to play around with.

What sort of drinks would you serve?

I love serving a seasonal spritz, something fresh with citrus or herbs, and a great bottle of wine. I always include a non-alcoholic option that still feels festive. Pitchers and carafes let people serve themselves, which keeps the vibe casual and welcoming. I’ll pour a few to start and let it evolve from there.

Would you include any extras little decorative flourishes?

If I do, it’s something fun and personal, maybe a beautiful stirrer or a handmade detail that adds a little charm. It’s those small touches that make things feel intimate and considered.

How would you serve food in a way that still encourages guests to be agile and move around?

For snacks, I’ll put out marinated olives, fruit, almonds, maybe some warm bread with a few dips. It’s light, easy, and keeps the energy flowing. I like to place small bites throughout the space on trays or side tables so people can move around, join different conversations, and stay engaged. It’s a roaming kind of evening.

Seating can be tricky when you want guests to mingle and not sit in the same place too long. How do you manage that?

Absolutely! I’d bring in a mix of pillows, poufs, stools, and maybe a bench, or some vintage chairs. The key is variety. It begins with a conversation about textures and colors, and finding the harmony between the two.

The pieces you choose need to create no conflict with each other, to flow. You can do this by looking at the space between them and the shapes in the air around your furniture.

By introducing gentle curves that complement each other, and spacing them apart so their outlines have room to breathe, it will all come together, creating natural gathering spots and making the space feel alive and welcoming.

What's always on your party playlist?

Music sets the tone. It should feel warm and full of rhythm, something that makes you smile. I’ve been absolutely loving SZA recently.

And would you layer in a scent?

I like adding just a hint by burning a little palo santo or lighting something earthy and grounding. It’s subtle, but it helps create a full experience Lighting is key though. I’d use candles, lanterns, string lights, and maybe even a small lamp if the setup allows. As the sun sets, the space should glow. That’s when it gets magical.

A fire pit always brings people together. There’s something so warm and timeless about it. Everyone ends up gathered around, talking deeper, staying longer. It anchors the evening in the best way.

'Start by choosing a theme for your summer tablescaping,' advises Kit Kemp. 'It could be for a special occasion, such as using a friend’s favourite color for their birthday celebration, or something whimsical, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream.'

As Kit says, your theme could be a color or a motif – like palm print or lemons – but giving your soiree a sense of tone and design helps everything feel more cohesive. A combination of all of these will make an evening party look really special.'

Think of arranging your lighting in layers: overhead, table-level, background, and on the ground For example, you could use string lights strung overhead in trees, (or try Pottery Barn's Outdoor Standing String Light Posts), in hedgerows, create clusters of candles or lanterns on the table to create a romantic feel, and consider uplighters to highlight different zones, such as your outdoor living room or an outdoor drinks station.

I’ve also learned that Bluetooth speakers placed behind the seating area help balance the sound beautifully.

We tend to associate long table settings with weddings (I should know, I used them) because they offer a more communal atmosphere that encourages connection. They’re also a brilliant canvas for styling, giving you the chance to repeat beautiful elements along the length of the table and create real visual impact.

The key elements? Linear sightlines and repetition.

Typically, the foundation of good styling for a long table is repetition, as you want each guest to have a similar view. Not just one centerpiece halfway down that most guests can't see. Instead, depending on the width of your table, you can create mini but striking vignettes that run the length or span the width without blocking sightlines or conversation.

Linens should stretch the full length of the table, and any decorative elements (whether flowers, candles, or even fruit) should feel like part of a continuous story. The goal is a table that draws the eye forward, invites guests to linger, and feels every bit as special as the occasion it’s set for.

1. Choose long runners and layer linens

One of the simplest ways to instantly elevate a long table setting is with indoor or outdoor table linens.

I always like to start with a simple base – usually a soft cotton or linen tablecloth in a neutral tone. From there, I add a runner down the center, sometimes in a contrasting color or pattern, and finish with individually styled napkins, either tied in a loose knot or tucked under plates for a more tailored look.

'I love the idea of using a chic table runner for a long table setting, rather than a tablecloth that covers the entire table,' suggests designer Kathy Kuo. 'A runner is going to feel polished and also allow for some contrast between the natural color of the table and whatever color your runner is.'

'Fabric lengths can make a great alternative to tablecloths for a really long table, setting' adds Susie Watson of Susie Watson Designs. 'A warm, colored rustic linen design (preferably stonewashed) would be lovely. For the garden, we would choose colors to complement the surroundings and set off the flowers.'

2. Define individual place settings

After arranging your linens, the next step is anchoring each place setting with a charger plate. I like to think of charger plates as the frame for the rest of the setting; they define each person's space, ground the china, and add an extra touch of detail.

For summer, I reach for chargers or placemats in natural materials like rattan tableware to bring texture, while keeping the vibe organic and relaxed, as well as introducing pops of sunshine hues like butter yellow decor.

'A long table setting invites both abundance and ease. I like to layer it with tactile textures – softly crumpled linens, handcrafted ceramics with a rustic charm,' agrees Lucy Uren, Founder and Creative Director at Rowen & Wren.

I also love that chargers are a chance to introduce subtle contrast. If my plates are white, I’ll use darker or warmer chargers to make them pop; if I’m using patterned dishes, a more minimal charger helps to ground the look.

3. Mismatch crockery but keep it cohesive

When I want a table to feel full of personality and warmth, I turn to one of my favorite tricks: mixing and matching crockery. Just ensure that you arrange the pieces evenly along the full length of your long table setting to keep it cohesive. For example, don't keep one style of crockery at one end of the table and another at the other – mismatch dinner and side plates in a random and eclectic way.

I’ll often pull from pieces I’ve collected over the years: a scalloped-edge plate from a vintage market, handmade pottery from a holiday, and even high-street finds that look far more expensive than they are.

'Create depth and texture by adding a patterned tablecloth, colourful napkins, plates, chargers, and candles,' advises Kit Kemp, creative director at Kit Kemp Design Studio. 'This creates a visual feast before any food arrives.'

It's key to know that mismatched doesn’t mean messy – it’s about creating contrast and character, so choose a consistent color palette, or tie things together with similar shapes or textures. That way, it feels purposeful, not random.

4. Add multiple centerpieces that are low and loose

A long table setting gives you the chance to create a ‘storyline’ with your decor. Instead of one summer table centerpiece idea, build movement down the table with less structure and low arrangements, it looks more natural – it’s far more guest-friendly, too.

Lean into asymmetry and negative space, scattering bud vases, trailing greenery, and small clusters of decor along the length of the table, with enough breathing room to avoid it feeling cluttered. 'Opt for floral arrangements and table decor with lower heights so that vision isn't obscured and try tea lights and votives as well for a sense of wonder and whimsy,' says Kathy.

'Hurricane vases with pillar candles and lots of bottles filled with a few garden flowers interspersed between is a lovely way to decorate a garden table,' adds Susie Watson. 'I like bottles in different heights for a more interesting effect and for outdoor eating, pottery is always nicer than china with a simple flower decoration.'

5. Mix up candle heights along the length

No matter how casual or spontaneous a summer gathering may be, I always find a way to work in a little candlelight. As the light fades, those tiny flickers bring warmth and intimacy to the table.

'A gentle trail of candlesticks flickers as the light fades, while garden-gathered foliage or seasonal stems bring the whole scene quietly to life,' adds Lucy Uren. It’s also the quickest way to shift the mood from daytime to golden hour, without doing much at all.

'Extra nightlights dotted around the table in glass containers will add atmosphere for evening entertaining,' says Susie. Use a mix of tealights, tall taper candles, and outdoor candle ideas if hosting al fresco to create rhythm along the table – and don’t feel you have to be symmetrical. It’s more interesting when it feels collected and a bit undone.

6. Intersperse seasonal accents

One of my favorite finishing touches for a long summer table is adding some seasonal produce as part of the decor. Because you have a lot more free space, you can play around with adding in some scattered lemons or peaches, layer in vine tomatoes and herbs in small bowls, or sprigs tucked into napkin folds.

It's a charming and simple way to make the table feel abundant and thoughtful. 'Small bowls of olives or chocolates can look charming and pretty cotton napkins on every side plate,' suggests Susie.

Additionally, Kit suggests: 'Accents of summer-inspired colors and fragrant seasonal flowers or fresh herbs such as rosemary and mint, will scent the space beautifully and help bring your table to life.'

The beauty of using fresh produce as decor is that it doesn't require an expensive shopping spree. Just a quick sweep through the farmers’ market (or your kitchen counter) and you’ll find elements that look intentional, smell amazing, and remind your guests of the season you’re celebrating.

How much space should I leave between guests for long table settings?

You should leave at least 2ft (24 inches) between guests for a long table setting, which works out as three people per side for a 6ft table. This is ample for a relaxed and casual setting, but for more formal events, where you want to give the impression of more space and may have additional flatware and glassware for multiple courses, look to leave a gap of 28 - 30 inches between guests.

Do long table settings need to be symmetrical?

Making sure long table settings are symmetrical will help it to feel more cohesive and styled as opposed to thrown together without much thought. Work from the middle outwards starting with a large, but low centerpiece and adding the same number of smaller centerpieces either side. One of Summer's most exquisite joys is having an alfresco lunch – what do you think the appeal of them is?

I think there’s something so special about entertaining outside. There's something about sharing a meal under the sun – surrounded by people you love – that can't be beat.

There’s more of a casual effortlessness and intimacy that comes from outdoor gatherings, which I always try to bring to life through a laid-back tabletop and seasonal menu.

I also try to make the most of my surroundings by bringing nature to the table in some way.

Would you say that there is an art to the perfect alfresco lunch?

Let nature lead the way! Don’t overthink it – bring in touches to your surroundings to make it feel extra special and relaxed. Small touches of seasonality easily bring a table to life, giving it a refined feeling. Don’t feel limited to only using flowers to decorate your table – using produce is a great way to bring life, color, and freshness to your spring tablescape.

What sort of serveware would you use?

I use our Pacific Dinnerware outside, or if I want something that won’t break I’ll use enamel plates from Crow Canyon. Then, I’ll add Sabre flatware throughout the table and to serve. I have almost every color – they’re the perfect look to add to any table. These pieces are as functional as they are elegant, no matter the season.

It can take a lot of work to make a lunch feel relaxed! How formal is your table setting?

Comfort is just as important as presentation. The more casual, the better. If I want a more rustic look, I’ll go sans tablecloth – but our Jenni Kayne Home linen tablecloths are always at the ready to help tie the scene together.

We have picnic tables and benches in our yard, which I think are the best for alfresco entertaining because they allow you to embrace the easygoing nature of it all. Then take a deep breath and settle in – welcome to the long, languorous lunch of your summer dreams.

What do you like to dress the table with?

I always think it’s fun to add a dash of color with napkins. I’ve been really into yellow and green – even adding in some gingham prints or simple stripes. Beyond that, I keep it simple and let any touches of nature and the food itself shine.

Of course, food has to be a key ingredient for a lunch. What do you tend to serve?

I love to serve everything family style. It gives the entire gathering an elevated feel, but as a host, it’s totally no-fuss. I’ll prepare a few dishes ahead of time – like a salad, veggies, and something simple like a frittata – and get some wine ready to serve. That way, when guests arrive, I’m able to partake in the fun.

And are there any extras you might include? Who gets to be in charge of the music?

Music is a must, always. My sister, Maggie, makes the best playlists. I always have something of hers on while I’m hosting.

Would you give guests anything to take away with them as they leave?

I recently went to an alfresco lunch at Thorne Family Farms in Malibu, and to wrap up the day, guests got to select fresh produce from the Thorne Family Farms Market – including fresh strawberries, lettuce, potatoes, broccoli, and so much more.

To tie it all together, they received spring floral bundles and woven raffia to carry everything home – and remember the day by.

Of course, there are some trends from the 1970s that we don’t mind staying well and truly in the past – shag pile carpets being one of them – but there are lots of design features which can sit happily within the modern kitchen. Whether you want to be fully transported back in time, or simply bring a subtle dose of kitsch, these retro kitchen ideas are guaranteed to inspire.

1. Go for bold earthy colors – think brown, orange and avocado

Looking back, it seems the 1970s was an era of maximalism, and we weren’t afraid of embracing color. Many kitchens of this period were a burst of energy and featured boldly colored laminate and Formica cabinet doors, which wouldn’t look out of place today.

‘When thinking of '70s kitchens, one immediately thinks of color – yellow, orange, avocado green, even blues, reds, and purples,’ explains Estelle Bilson, author of '70s House. ‘Kitchen manufacturers realized they could market different "fashion" colors to consumers for the first time, especially as the "fitted" kitchen was a relatively new concept.’

'I think people were more open to brighter kitchen color ideas and didn't play things safe like today, where white, gray and black dominate the kitchen offering. Other design aspects would include either cork or patterned tiled floors and brightly patterned wall tiles.'

Above is Estelle’s colorful kitchen – an authentic 1970s design that she purchased second-hand and fitted into her own home. ‘I found it on a Facebook group. I'd been looking for a suitable vintage kitchen for nearly 10 years. This one came up, and it was the right size, in good condition, and fairly local. I paid £250 and had to dismantle it myself (with help from a friend) and put it into storage before fitting it in our home.’

If you’re looking to install a vintage kitchen, then 'buy one with more cabinets than you think you will need,' advises Estelle, 'that way you have flexibility, which is really important, as it's problem solving.'

'Flexibility is key, and don't be too precious,' she adds. 'It's an old kitchen, (mine is 50 years old) so it's never going to be pristine; however, everyone who worked on it remarked how good the condition was for its age, a modern kitchen wouldn't look that good after 40 plus years.'

2. Introduce groovy geometric patterns on tiles and wallpaper

Abstract, geometric prints were commonplace in 1970s interiors, with curvaceous, psychedelic designs particularly popular. For a subtle way to introduce them, why not try a splashback of funky tiles? In this mid-century home in South Carolina, architecture and interior studio Ario Studio were enlisted to modernize the interiors and create a space that paid homage to the mid-century architecture. For the kitchen, they drew on design from the mid-century modern period, opting for a mix of walnut and colorful custom cabinets with exposed plywood edges.

‘It was extremely important to keep the design and the finish selections as well as the layout choices in keeping with the architectural style,’ says Brittany Arnold, owner, architect, and interior designer. ‘Curated mid-century colors and materials throughout the home support the interior design and layout to create a cohesive concept.'

'The kitchen is a really special place in the house, it is oriented to maximize the views outside. Walnut, orange, and blue come together to create a warm yet dynamic atmosphere. The beauty of design lies in the details, and we love how these tones bring both energy and balance to the space,' adds Brittany Arnold.

4. Introduce industrial touches

During the 1970s, there was a fascination with space exploration and new technology, which filtered into interiors and manifested itself in sleek design features, metal finishes, and futuristic design concepts.

In this 1970s kitchen, a stainless steel countertop and splashback are paired with metal pendant lamps to give the space an industrial edge. If you are looking to bring a '70s touch into your current kitchen, this would be an easy way to do so. After a long love affair with warm metallics, chrome decor has made a huge comeback this year, so plenty of brands feature it in their latest collections. Entertaining at home became more popular in the 1970s, and a home bar was a sought-after addition. ‘Geometric patterns and earthy tones were prevalent in 1970s interior design, and I find that I gravitate towards both when designing spaces,’ says Elin Walters, founder and principal designer at the studio. ‘I love mid-century design because of its simplicity, geometry, color, use of natural materials, attention to bringing the outdoors inside, and focus on functional form.’

6. Take a cue from 1970s glamour

From disco fever to glam rock, the 1970s fashion and music scene wasn’t short of sequins and sparkle, and interiors followed suit with opulent glass chandeliers, metallic surfaces, and plush velvets all bringing a luxe feel. To inject a little 1970s chic into the kitchen, why not hang statement pendant lamps over a kitchen island as done in this kitchen by Creative Tonic?

‘In designing this kitchen update for our clients, we drew inspiration from French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent during his iconic 1970s era. The combination of brass and peacock blue evokes his fun paisley prints, while the statement pendant lights from Arteriors remind me of his stylized ’70s jewellery,’ says Courtnay Tartt Elias, founder and principal designer at Creative Tonic.

When thinking about kitchen lighting, make sure you get the right light fitting for the right tasks. ‘A long, sexy, chrome or glass cascading chandelier is an iconic '70s feature over a dining table, it creates a statement for sure,’ says Estelle Bilson. ‘In other areas of a kitchen, you need more directional/task lighting. I've used original 1970s Nokia track lighting.’

7. Channel boho chic with hanging houseplants

The 1970s weren't just about disco fever and space age design, a yearning for freedom and creativity led to the rise of boho interiors imbued with a relaxed spirit and natural materials. Rattan furniture, kilim carpets, and woven macramé wall hangings found favor, and a trend for indoor plants emerged.

'In the ’70s, house plants were the vibe. I’ve added lots of plants all over our home. I have collected handmade pottery to plant them in and have hung several with macrame to give a nod to our home’s history,' says Laura Olden of @SavageHouse1970.

'Our home was built in 1970, we try to honor the home’s history and the architect’s original intent. We love that 1970s design isn’t afraid to use color and bold patterns. We recently added high-pressure laminate countertops back to the kitchen in a color that matches the original harvest gold ones,' adds Laura Olden of her 1970s-inspired kitchen.

For a quick and easy way to embrace boho kitchen decor, hang an array of house plants in macramé pot hangers or invest in some rattan or cane bar stools or home accessories.

8. Add colorful appliances

In the 1970s, the market for kitchen appliances grew hugely, and colored designs provided a great opportunity for self-expression in kitchens, which had not long since been viewed as purely practical spaces.

‘Changes in the way we worked and shopped meant that for the first time in history women were starting to work whilst married and raising children, this saw a boom in the sales of labor saving devices such as fridge freezers, front loading washing machines and even the start of dishwasher and microwave ownership if you had the funds,’ says Estelle Bilson.

Today it seems our appetite for colorful appliances has come full circle with companies such as Smeg, KitchenAid, and Lacanche all offering an array of bold appliances with retro styling.

While some design features will undoubtedly conjure the 1970s kitchen look, such as high-pressure laminate kitchen cabinets and bold orange and harvest yellow, there are no strict rules on how to capture the 1970s look in a kitchen. 'The 1970s was an era of diverse fashions and trends with no one defining look,' explains Estelle.

'Culturally, it's a really diverse and interesting era, and what I like to think of as the start of modern living. I love the diversity of style within the 10-year period, within that short time you have everything from the left over style of hippie and space age from the '60s right through glam rock, art deco revival, disco, punk and what would be called "cottage core" now with Gunn Sax and Laura Ashley.'
